Pamela replied, “Sybil is not here right now”. Walter said, “Who else is with you”. Pamela replied, “No one of importance except me”. Walter said, “Could I please speak to one of the non important people please”. Walter said, “I was so intent on hearing Simon’s story I forgot to ask, where are Melanie and Judith”. Simone said, “I’ll go and look upstairs”. At the top of the stairs she could see both Melanie and Judith asleep in each other’s arms on the spare bedroom floor.
When she returned down stairs she found Sybil fussing over Walter. Sybil said, “Quick call an ambulance, he is having a heart attack”. Simone dialled 999 and asked for an ambulance ASAP. Sybil said, “You had better take the girls and go, you need to open the shop tomorrow and I will stay here as see if Walter recovers”. Simone collected all her things and woke the girls. Sybil said, “Can you leave the holdall from your car my spare clothes are in it”.
The ambulance came while Sybil was changing and she just threw on her red coat to answer the door. The medics loaded Walter onto a stretcher and said they would take him to the Scarborough General Hospital, Woodlands Drive. Sybil said, “I will finish getting dresses and then follow on. The medic said, “You can come in the ambulance if you are family. Sybil said, “I am his grandniece”. So she went to the hospital wearing a bra, knickers and a short red mackintosh.
Walter was rushed into the resuscitation room while Sybil sat in the waiting room. She thought about her dress and then decided it would have been what Walter would have wanted so she stopped caring what people might think.
Walter did not recover; the doctor came out to Sybil after half an hour and told her. Sybil was devastated and the Doctor showed her into a small chapel where she could sit quietly for a while. Sybil said that she would like to see him one last time, so the doctor took her to where his body was.
She sat with him for what seemed like hours but it was only nine fifteen when she left the Hospital in search of a taxi. She soon found one and was back at Walter’ house in no time at all. When she unlocked the door, she found the house empty and unwelcoming. She sat on Walter’s seat and thought, what am I supposed to do. She decided to look through his papers and found a lot of recent correspondence with his solicitor and with his bank. She also found a sealed envelope with Sybil on it. She sat on the stairs and opened it. She read how sorry Walter was for the nasty things he did to her and went on to tell her where everything was and how it all worked. He had a new compound that would be his very best mind control medication. One teaspoon full in a drink would take the trance down to the very bottom that was possible much lower than any other known method. There were six gallons of this compound in the Garage. Walter instructed Sybil to either use it with his blessing or destroy it but make sure no one else including Simone would be able to use it. Sybil thought, “If I am to be the guardian for this stuff I will have to test it so I know what it can do”.
Before she could read any more the phone rang, answering it she found Simone on the other end. Sybil told her all about Walter and that she would wait around for a few days to sort out his estate. That night she slept in Walter’s room and had the best sleep in ages. The phone awoke her again in the morning and Simone said, “The talisman isn’t working on Judith and I can’t take these knickers off or Toad and Sock out”. Sybil said, “Walter has refined his stuff, I will try and find it, I hope he hasn’t destroyed it all. I don’t think those men meant you any long term harm so you should be able to use the toilet”.
Simone said, “Yes I went this morning, but I put everything was back in place afterwards before I realised. As soon as you find it please help us, we need you”. Sybil thought, “She can’t be in Latex” and then said, “I will see the Solicitor this morning and see how long I am needed here”. They chatted for a bit longer and then ended the call. Sybil got up and made breakfast before continuing her search of the house. She found a box containing letters to his children they were dated thirty years earlier and started out regular and loving and then things changed and they become sporadic and complaining when she read the last one form his daughter, she told him she wanted nothing more to do with him ever, the date on this one was nearly fifteen years ago. In the bottom of the wardrobe she found a box of diary’s and Sybil read Walter’s side of the breakdown and then what he liked about Sybil.
At nine o’clock Sybil phoned the Solicitor and told him about Walter and asked to see him. She was sitting in the Solicitors office at nine forty five, when she learnt what Walter had been doing. He had adopted her and had set up a trust and bank account in the name of Miss Dolly Page. Walter had also made a request that she agree to let Mr Scudamore, administer one final mental change. Mr Scudamore explained that there was a sealed box in his safe that contained the necessary instructions and equipment to undertake the request. Sybil said, “If that is what he wants I will not decline. Mr Scudamore took her into another room and brought in the box saying, “You open it and do as he instructed and I will be back in half an hour”.
