It All Begins in Dreams

“Mistress, he is mine.” Simone was quite satisfied with herself, still feeling the lingering traces of her last orgasm.

For a moment there was silence.

“What did you say?”

“I said Jack has finally been converted.”

“I see.”

“Mistress, did you hear me?” Simone was confused. “He is finally ours. You can make your move now.”

“I heard you. Where are you?” Her Mistress’ tone was neutral, almost wary.

“At their house. In my room.”

“Is anyone there with you?”

“No, of course—”

“Good. I’ll be right there, Simone, but don’t tell anyone. Do you hear me? Tell no one.”

“Yes, of course. But I thought—”

“I’ll be there within the hour. Keep an eye out for me.”

“Of course, Ma’am.

Simone looked at her cell phone in confusion. While she could imagine many responses to her news, this hadn’t been one of them.

“Ma’am, we just learned that Regina Ramos is on her way here.”

Jeri VanDoren was suddenly interested. “Are you sure about that?”

“Yes Ma’am. She’ll be here shortly.”

“I wonder if she’s making her move.” She thought for a moment. “Okay, I’ll be right there. We may be able to put an end to this tonight. Keep your men ready.”

“Yes Ma’am.”

Regina didn’t bother knocking. When the door opened, she looked around carefully then stepped inside.

“Mistress, he’s upstairs—”

“Shut up. Where can we talk in private?”

Simone led her to a den and closed the door behind her.

“Alright, now tell me everything that’s happened. And don’t leave out a thing!”

She listened quietly as Simone described the events leading up to the moment. When she was finally done, Regina stood there slowly shaking her head, trying to control her rage. Finally, she spoke.

“Well, it looks like you’ve completely fucked things up.”

Simone stared at her in disbelief.

“What the hell were you thinking?” Regina demanded.

“What do you mean?”

“It seems like you’ve had one nice romp in the sack after another, but you gloss over the only part of the story that matters. Now, why don’t you tell me again how you finally seduced Jack?”

“Well, I—”

“Hello, Ms. Ramos.”

Regina and Simone turned to see Amanda enter the room and take a seat behind the desk. She had with her the globe from Simone’s room. From the sharp intake of breath, Regina knew Simone hadn’t expected this. Well, it all made sense now. Actually, she was somewhat relieved to have the girl come to her instead of the other way around. It did make things much simpler this way.

Without hesitation, the older woman demanded, “What have you been up to girl?”

“What do you mean?” The look of feigned innocence on Amanda’s face enraged Regina. Did the girl think she was a complete imbecile?

“Don’t give me that!” she growled. “What the hell has been going on here?”

“I believe Simone has explained it to you.”

Simone opened her mouth to speak.

“Shut up, Simone!” Regina snapped without so much as a glance at the maid. “From what she’s explained, and what I see now, I can tell you one thing: you’re in way over your head. And don’t think that turning that thing on will protect you. There’s no way a globe can save you now!”

Continuing as if she hadn’t heard a thing, Amanda said, “I would like to know a few things, though.”

The absolute gall of the girl! For a moment Regina felt like strangling her!

“Let me clue you in on what’s going to happen. You’re going to stop wasting my time and hand over that globe. Then you’re going to tell me everything you’ve been up to—every last bit of it. Do you hear?”

Amanda gave her a condescending smile. “No wonder my father found you to be so difficult.”

Regina’s eyes bulged in outrage. Unable to speak for a moment she took a deep breath to calm herself again.

Amanda looked down at the globe. “Have you ever seen what happens when two of these are working in the same room?” She switched it on. The globe on the desk behind her flared in response.

Regina was not impressed. “There are two modes for that globe. It’s either transmitting to the other one, or emitting its own pulses. It can’t do both at the same time. In other words, you idiot, there will only be one globe sending out pulses. Besides, I didn’t exactly come unprepared,” she said, waving a hand in the general vicinity of her head. Alerted to the flaws in the earpieces, she’d taken the precaution of wearing two of the devices. There was no way a globe could penetrate both protective shields.

Amanda made derisive a sound. “Those are about as useful as an umbrella in a hurricane.” Her voice turned threatening. “And when I get done with you, you’ll think it really was a hurricane!”

Well, at least her pretense of innocence was over, Regina thought. But she didn’t have time to admire the girl for her nerve. Knowing she had to end this now, she started towards the desk.

“Stop right there,” Amanda said quickly as she lifted the globe over her shoulder. Regina paused. “You wouldn’t want me to smash this, now would you? Do you know what kind of mental explosion that would create? It couldn’t possibly be pleasant.”

“In case you hadn’t noticed, that explosion would include yourself.”

Amanda’s lopsided smile suggested she was aware of this fact and didn’t really care.

Regina was more than a little surprised by the teenager. This was nothing like the nervous, immature girl Simone had described a few weeks earlier. She thought for a second, unsure what to do. She wasn’t thrilled with the only idea that was left her, but sometimes one had to take chances. She made a gesture signaling her compliance.

“That’s better. Now, please have a seat, both of you,” Amanda said, gesturing towards the leather chairs in front of the desk. She put the globe down before her while they found a seat. “Thank you. Now, how did you know things had changed, Ms. Ramos?”

Regina suppressed a sigh, knowing she had to play along with this child for just a little bit longer to find out where things stood. Controlling an urge to reach into her handbag, she said, “Simone didn’t call in with the proper phrase, so I knew someone had gotten to her.” She could see Simone’s startled reaction, and ignored it. Not all the fail-safes were known to her operatives, even one as high up as Simone. “As soon as I heard her story, I knew who.” She gave the maid a disgusted look, adding, “I never thought she’d be dumb enough to take off her earpiece.”

“Well, I didn’t exactly have time to account for such things as passwords, of course,” Amanda mused. “Especially since Simone wasn’t aware—”

“Which was the point, of course.”

“Yes, well, it was hard enough sorting out what you did to my parents in the little time I had,” she said, now glaring at Regina. “You should be put away for life for what you did to them!”

“Oh, are they hurt in any way? Or unhappy?” Amanda said nothing as she continued to glare at the older woman. Going on conversationally, Regina asked, “And what else did you do, Amanda?” She was more interested in the response that she let on.

“I’m sure you’d like to know, but I don’t think now is a good time to go into that.”

“And why is that?”

“We don’t have much time until everyone else arrives.”

Regina tried not to show how much that got her attention. Avoiding others was critical at this point, and she knew she had to act. Calmly reaching into her handbag, she said, “I don’t think so. It’s time to end this little game of yours.”

She’d brought an oversized bag just for this possibility. Anyone looking for a globe would have been completely unprepared for what she had in mind. Her hand emerged holding a device that looked like a miniature satellite dish. Simone and Amanda gazed at it with equal curiosity. Amanda’s eyes began to show concern.

As for herself, she had to work hard to maintain her air of confidence. Her hands wanted to shake as she prepared to actually use the damned thing. It was the latest in a long line of disappointments, and hadn’t been fully tested. She had been assured it had passed the trial phase and was probably safe, but that was hardly reassuring. Previous versions had been so unstable as to cause brain damage in test subjects. That wouldn’t have concerned her very much except that it had also been prone to losing focus and backfiring on the person holding the device. Because of their dubious status, she’d hoped to avoid using it, but the current situation left her no choice.

The dish was designed to create a far more focused mental field than the globes. If all went well, she could impose her will on another with far more control, and in much less time than the globes could ever manage. In a battle between globe and dish, there would be no contest.

Without another word, she raised the dish, pointed it at Amanda, and pressed the button. As she held it, she spoke conversationally, “This is the latest little device from my own personal R&D team. I’m afraid it’s going to make your globe obsolete. Even still, I can’t have you destroying that. So, aside from whatever else it’s doing to you, you’ll notice you won’t be able to lift the globe again.”

She expected an immediate response, but nothing happened at first. Regina found herself wondering if it was broken or if the girl was somehow immune to its effects. In spite of the earpiece she wore, Amanda should have been showing the strain being put on her. Her doubts vanished when Amanda squinted and closed one eye tightly. She slowly reached one hand up and began rubbing her temple.

“That was a warning,” Regina explained, her finger relaxing. “Would you care to see what this thing can really do? I should advise you, I’m not really sure what a safe level is. If you push your luck, it’s quite possible your mind will be permanently damaged.”

The response she got wasn’t what she’d anticipated. She almost expected Amanda to move for the globe again, threatening to destroy it; but then, maybe that had been a bluff all along. What occurred was a surprise, not only in what did happen, but in what didn’t. Without warning Regina started to see colors swirl around her, just beyond the edges of her sight. One second everything was fine, the next, she was surrounded by colors. What was surprising was that Amanda hadn’t even moved to touch the globe. Apparently, she was in contact with it without even needing to do so. It was time to reassess the young woman’s ability.

“Very good,” she said, impressed. “You know, I could find a place for you in my organization . . . if I don’t have to destroy you first!” She increased the output and triggered another pulse. This time she left her finger on the button and focused her will upon the teen. Very soon now the globe would be quiet and Amanda would be putting her talents to good use instead of resisting.

Amanda closed her eyes again and shook her head vigorously, trying to shake the effects. Instead of reaching for her head, though, she moved deliberately for the globe. Expecting her to reach for the switch, Regina was surprised to see the globe’s output increased instead. The globe behind Amanda flared in response. It was all Regina could do to keep the surprise from showing on her face.

Immediately, the colors surrounding Regina went black. Then, like a swarm, it descended, cutting her off from everything around her. She could feel her skin crawl at the “touch,” then felt a shudder of panic as something constricted her chest, making breathing very difficult. In fact, any movement was getting harder. She took a deep, ragged breath.

Regina was shocked. Prepared as she was, she simply should not have been affected like this. Either the earpieces were more defective than she’d believed, or Amanda was far stronger than anyone she’d ever seen. Maybe both. She hated to think she’d underestimated the girl yet again.

While she hadn’t wanted to do this—a person of Amanda’s obvious talent shouldn’t be wasted—Regina knew she couldn’t afford to let this go on much longer. The risk to herself was growing too great.

Trying to appear unaffected, she gave a short laugh. “Give it up you foolish girl. Your little tricks are nice, but you can’t set that much higher, and it’s no match the power of this!” Her finger still on the trigger, she once again turned the intensity up. With all of her might, she willed the girl to turn the damned globe off.

Amanda grabbed her head and fell heavily on her elbows. Her one hand tried desperately to relieve the pain while the other gripped the globe with white knuckles. But she never reached for the switch that would finally disable the globe! Slowly, her fingers increased the intensity yet again, and the globe behind her blazed stronger than ever!

Suddenly, the swarm of blackness, which had been surrounding her, moved within and Regina felt an intense shadow overcome her mind. She fought it and focused again on forcing Amanda to her will. The shadow receded for a moment, then returned, stronger than before. Suddenly the feeling was like some awful strobe, pounding her head. Looking up through bleary eyes, she found it hard to focus on Amanda’s face, which now seemed to waver before her.

Regina was shocked. How could that globe possibly match the output of her dish? And what the hell was causing that horrible strobe effect on her mind. Looking down fearfully at her dish, she knew. It was losing its focus and was lashing out wildly. It had never been tested at this level before and couldn’t be trusted.

There was another problem to consider. Never before had two conflicting mental fields operated in such close proximity. The air in the room practically crackled with the output of energy, and she could feel a horrible rippling sensation over her skin and her hair stood up as the two fields fought for supremacy. She didn’t want to think what it was doing to her mind. Even if she survived this, it might be permanently damaged by the exposure.

Then, for no reason, the strobe effect was gone. The blackness remained and was still squeezing the life out of her, but the pounding had vanished. As her vision cleared, Regina realized that her arm had fallen and the dish was now pointing at the ground. With an effort she raised her hand again to point the dish at Amanda. As soon as she did, the globe behind the teen started flaring wildly out of control, and the strobe sensation returned, as strong as ever.

She heard a cry and glanced over to see Simone, pulling at her hair, blood dripping from her nose. The look in her face was of complete terror. Through her black, hazy vision, Regina stared at Amanda in disbelief. At the very least, Amanda should be unconscious by now. Instead, she hardly looked like she was affected, and was somehow increasing the dark forces attacking Regina’s mind! There were now knife-like stabbing pains in her head and she felt like she was losing consciousness. She took one ragged breath and held it, willing herself to stay awake.

She looked down and tried to move the hand on the dial to increase the dish’s output to the maximum level. A pulse of that level might kill her, might kill them all, but she would surely die if she didn’t stop the blackness that was sucking the life out of her.

“Stop it Regina! You’re going to kill yourself!”

Doggedly, Regina looked up at Amanda. “Never!” she snarled. Regina saw the shock on the girl’s face, and knew the earlier threat to destroy the globe had been a bluff. Just like her father, Amanda was weak, and was now desperate to save herself. “Stupid girl, your plan failed, and now you have to choose. Either turn off your globe, or finish us all!”

“No!”

“Then it’s on your head,” Regina said, knowing fully what this meant. As she moved to turn the dish’s output up the rest of the way, she was certain that one of the following would occur: if the girl saw she was serious about this, she would back down, or, if something awful did happen, it was better to do this herself than to let someone else take her. She started to increase the intensity one last time.

“What the hell’s going on here?!?”

Amanda shot a look over Regina’s shoulder. “Daddy no!!!”

The girl’s concentration shaken, Regina felt the field around her weaken. She seized her chance. Without stopping to think, she turned and focused the dish on Jack, who was standing in the doorway. Too late, she realized her finger was still on the trigger!

Jack’s eyes went wide in shock, and his face twisted in a grotesque contortion. He looked like he was suffocating and a strangled cry escaped his lips. Grabbing onto the doorjamb for support, he stood frozen for what seemed like an eternity, then his eyelids fluttered and he began to slide downward.

Regina quickly turned the device away, knowing it was already too late. Unprotected as it was, Jack’s mind was no match for the horrendous attack. She watched in horror as he lost his grip and he fell like a puppet with its strings cut.

Regina froze as she stared at his body in disbelief. Her plans were ruined! Almost as much as taking over the company, she had wanted to see Jack pay. She’d wanted to see his face when she took her place at the head of Stocker. She wanted to see his expression when she told him he would be the one who would serve her personally. She wanted to hear his voice as he gave his undying devotion to her. She’d wanted to wake up to that every day for the rest of her life.

But that was all gone now. Jack lay there, lifeless, barely even breathing, and all Regina could think was how it had all been taken from her!

She came back to herself when she heard someone scream.

“DADDY!!!!!”

The shadow surrounding her was gone now, and Regina turned viciously on Amanda, ready to destroy her for what she had caused.

Amanda never saw her. She was still calling for her father as she stared in horror, the blood drained from her face. Her cry finally ended and a sob shook her. Finally, she was able to move again and leaped up, ready to rush toward him.

“Don’t even think about it,” Regina snapped.

Amanda looked at her as if she’d just remembered she was still there. She glanced down, saw the dish pointed at her, then back up, and saw death in Regina’s eyes. She took a step back, then turned to her father again, frozen with indecision.

“He’s still alive, Amanda,” at least she hoped he was, “but not for long. Not if I turn this thing on him again. Would you like that? Would you like to watch him die before your eyes.” When Amanda said nothing, she added, “You know I’ll do it.”

Never looking away from the stricken teen, she slowly turned her dish back toward the helpless man, her finger on the button that would send the fatal pulse.

“I’m not going to say it again. Either turn the globe off, or watch him die.”

Amanda looked desperately into her eyes and saw she wasn’t bluffing. She looked back at her father, lying very still on the floor. Then with a cry, she picked up the globe again, ready to hurl it down, making good on her final threat.

“I wouldn’t do that!” Regina started quickly.

“Go to hell!”

“Unless you want him to die from your hand instead of mine.”

Amanda stopped as that sank in. The look on her face said it all as her eyes slowly widened, and her mouth opened wordlessly. Realizing her one real threat had now been neutralized, her expression became at first one of shock, and eventually defeat. Her eyes welled up with tears as she looked disconsolately at the globe and then at her father. Slowly, she lowered it to the desk. A flick of a switch and both globes went dim.

Regina took a deep breath, then exhaled slowly in relief. “Now take off the earpiece.”

There was no life left in the teenager. Shoulders slumped, she fell back in her chair. Silently, she reached up and removed the protective device. She looked at it blankly for a few moments, then let it fall from her fingers.

With a satisfied grin, Regina turned the dish towards her young rival, adjusted the output, and turned it on.

To be continued. . . .
