Chapter 1, Robert Wilson
Robert Wilson was a twenty five year old Software Engineer who had just secured his first Job after completing his Master’s Degree. He was due to start on the following Monday and he was moving from his University digs into an apartment he had rented near the offices where he had secured employment. His Father and Cousin were helping and when everything was moved, they all went out for a pint of Ale. Robert’s Father had one pint and then went home leaving Robert and his cousin, James. James was a little older than Robert and had qualified as a chemist before joining a chemical research company. He had been working for this same company for five years and was working on a covert project, unable to tell Robert anything about it. They had three pints each and then decided to stop. Before departing they agreed to meet up a weeks hence on the following Friday.
Robert returned to his apartment and started to unpack and store everything away. He worked all through the weekend finishing everything on Sunday at four o’clock in the afternoon.
He spent the evening making sure he was ready for Monday morning and his new job.
Next morning Robert awoke before the alarm went off and he started his morning preparations. After shaving and grooming he put on a white shirt and blue and cream tie and his dark blue suit, he wanted to make the right impressions on his first day. Leave his apartment clean and tidy; he commenced the short walk to work, arriving ten minutes early. He was met by the personnel director and shown around the company, he was asked to join the team that tested and validated products before going to market and to assist customers bedding in new products.
The Personnel Director explained that the line manager in charge of his department had been away for some time but would be back on Wednesday.
After the tour, Robert joined the support team and was given a guided tour through the new product. There were several documents to read before he could get to work so after been given a desk he started to read. He read for the remainder of the day and left work at five thirty. During the late afternoon he had discovered the name of his line manager and he was not happy. It could be someone else with the same name but it could also be his nemesis. At university when he was finishing his first degree, he was smitten by one of the girls on a different course, he asked her out but she declined and was rather rude and vindictive. He had fallen for her in a hard way and never looked at another woman all through his Master’s degree.
He decided to wait until Wednesday before making any decision to move on. He knew it would not look good on his résumé so he may have to knuckle down and ignore her.
He decided to have a drink on the way home and ended up eating in the same Inn he had been with his Father and James. The waitress was very friendly and he thought he could make a play for her next time.
Next morning he got ready for work with a slight hangover and was still feeling the effects of the night before when he arrived at work. He finished reading the test documentation by lunch time and joined in the product test after lunch. Robert has a knack of finding errors but he was also very good at fixing them and he quickly became a productive member of the team. After identifying and fixing nine errors during the afternoon, he left work at five, forty-five with the other members of the team. They all decided they need a drink so they ended up at the pub Robert found the previous night. The waitress was not there so Robert only had two pints and then went home.
He was not looking forward to the next morning so he called his cousin to see if he was hungry. James had just arrived home from work and agreed to meet up for a meal. James arrived forty minutes later and they decided on a local Chinese restaurant.
During the meal Robert gave his tale of woe and James listened closely. After Robert had given his narrative about his lost love, James asked, “Do you know why she reacted in that way to your invitation to diner.” Robert replied, “I have no idea, she may be a lesbian or was already in a relationship.” James replied, “Wait until you find out if it is her or not and contact me straight away, I may be able to get hold of something, that might help.”
Robert agreed to call him at work as soon as he knew either way. The chatted all through the meal and James paid the tab, saying, “You can repay me when you get paid.”
Robert agreed and they went back to his apartment for coffee. They continued to chat about work and girls and Robert departed at a quarter past ten. Robert cleared away the coffee mugs and went to bed. He did not steep well his mind was working hard thinking about what James had hinted at during diner. Robert had dabbled in Hypnosis while doing his Master’s and had successfully given three erotic hypnotic acts at a night club near the university. He would have continued but the club closed due to embezzlement by the management and unpaid bills. Robert was pleased he had agreed to be funded by that date.
While lying awake he decided that if the job did not pan out because of Caroline, he would embark on a career as a stage hypnotist. He had learnt a number of very effective induction techniques and he never had anyone who volunteered who was not taken under in no time at all.
James had indicated that there was some substance that would place someone in a very deep trance without being inducted and the resultant programming was unbreakable. He considered if there was such a substance and how he would use it on Caroline.
He eventually went to sleep and dreamed of mind control and hypnosis. Next morning he awoke with the alarm and got out of bed feeling un-refreshed. He performed his morning ablutions on autopilot and dressed in his smartest casuals, arriving at work ten minutes early.
He went straight to his desk and continued testing the product. He found another error after only fifteen minutes and delved into the code to see where to failure was. He found that the error handling had not been incorporated and was missing all together. He rang the development supervisor and informed him of the error. The Supervisor was very protective over the released code and inferred that Robert was responsible for the lost code. Robert became angry and told the supervisor to check the version he had before he pushed blame on the testers.
At Nine o’clock he was asked to go and see the line manager and he thought well that was a short employment. As he entered the line mangers office he became aware that his worse fear were realised. Caroline was sitting behind a large desk. She watched him enter and then said, “Well look you the cat dragged in. I see you finished your Master’s degree with flying colours. Robert said, “There is no need to be condescending, I will tender my resignation with immediate effect.”
Caroline replied, “There is no need to be so defensive, I have only heard good things about you since you arrived.” Robert replied, “Well that might change now, I have just had a run in with Jack Bridges, he has accused me of being destructive with the current testing. So I will work until Friday and then leave.” Robert turned and walked out of the room. He returned to his desk and called his cousin. After updating James on what had happened, James said, “Don’t do anything until I see you, I will be in the pub at lunch time.” Robert discussed his findings with the team and they all said, “Disregard anything Jack Bridges says, he speaks before he thinks. We can prove if the code was missing when we received the product, it was backed up into escrow before we started. The backup was restored and the code examined and it was found to be in error as Robert had recorded. They worked until lunch time but Roberts mind was not on the job. He apologised before going to meet his cousin feeling very rejected.
