Clocks and Timepieces 2: The Canvas
Issue 12: Blood and Sweat
The hairs on Bloodstone’s neck stood on end as she entered The Jabberwocky’s private study. She expected it to be empty, knowing he had left for Hel just hours ago. But she couldn’t shake off the feeling that he was still here.
Hastily rummaging through his drawers, she found nothing of use. So she turned to his multi-screen holographic computer, feeling a mix of fear and excitement at the thought of delving into her Master’s personal files.
Are you kidding? His computer is actually open?
She hastily glanced around, her face scrunched up with fear,
Calm down Beth. It’s fine. He’s not here. He’s not here. He’s not omnipresent. You should be excited! Now you get to see what Master’s up to!
Quickly typing in some key search words into the computer, she browsed through The Jabberwocky’s personal files. Looking for information, anything that could help her find what he was going after. She knew part of his plan—to come to Earth 1 with an enslaved team of superheroes and wreak havoc on the lives of Earth 27 residents. But what was his end game? At this rate, the alternate Kyle would have enough power to challenge The Jabberwocky outright. And if alternate Kyle won…she shuddered at the thought.
That Kyle already has a Bethany. He won’t need two. He wouldn’t want two…Oh my…God!
Her fingers froze on the keyboard as she processed this realization.
Master wants...we’re being erased?!
Bethany Von Hoffe stirred from a hazy slumber, her mind slowly emerging from a thick fog. Her surroundings were unfamiliar, and she struggled to remember how she had ended up here. As she blinked away the remnants of sleep, she noticed a figure standing nearby. The girl was strikingly beautiful, with bold brows and cascading black hair that framed her athletic frame. Bethany felt a glimmer of recognition, but could not place where she had seen this girl before.
The girl reached out her hand in greeting. “Hey there, I’m Jack. In case you don’t remember.” Her smile was mischievous as she offered her hand for Bethany to shake.
“Bethany. We uh…” She took her hand awkwardly and shook it.
“Yeah. Your face was in my muff just a day or two ago.” Jack seemed to relish the memory.
As Bethany tried to piece everything together, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, Jack posed a question. “How much do you actually remember?”
The memories flooded back as Bethany tried to piece together what had happened. She remembered being in a prison, but the details were fuzzy and disjointed. Kyle had told her about his identity and they had slept in the same bed. But everything else was a blur, with random thoughts and no clear sense of what was real.
Jack filled in some gaps for her, explaining that they were in Barrenwolf Maximum Security Prison for the Criminally Insane, one of the toughest prisons in St. Angelus and the entire US. She revealed that she was from an alternate dimension where Katie Frasier had gone mad and taken over the world, including St. Angelus which was a crimeless but oppressive utopia under her rule. In this world, Jack had been caught by The Jabberwocky and thrown into the prison after attempting to steal a device meant to defeat Supernova.
“Device?”
“Yeah, I was working for a resistance movement that opposed Supernova. I stole a device that was supposed to be able to help defeat her but The Jabberwocky caught me and took over my mind. Then he threw me in prison. I was in the cell next to yours when I saw you two get brought in. I knew I needed Kyle’s help to escape. Barrenwolf employs a drug that impairs the higher level functions of the mind. A bimbo virus drug invented by Nigel Grimalde and repurposed by the prison to keep order. You ate the food and ingested the drug and you’ve been under its influence ever since. Kyle found the cure for you today and brought it back and administered it to you. He tasked me with making sure you’re alright and filling you in on current events.”
Bethany took all of the information in, “Current events? Like what? What happened?”
“Well, I’m his slave now. Tone too.”
“What?! When did that happen?! What!?”
“Yeah well Tone was enslaved by Katie Frasier in this world, but her memories were suppressed for her own protection. When they resurfaced, she spiraled into a desperate state and begged Kyle to enslave her again, to fix her broken mind that craved the addictive pleasure of serving Katie.”
“And you?” Bethany prompted, her brow furrowing in concern.
“Well, turns out The Jabberwocky played a twisted trick on me when he initially enslaved my mind. He gave me a trigger phrase that would force me to become someone’s slave if they made a certain joke about my water powers.”
“And of course Kyle made a joke about your water powers.” Bethany said with a sigh.
“Unknowingly of course. But yeah. So now I’m his slave.” Jack added with no hint of resignation in her voice.
Bethany raised an eyebrow, “Ok. Tone makes sense. I’ve been under the influence before, it feels good to submit and she went through the ringer with Katie. We all did. But why you? Can’t Kyle just remove it?”
Jack shook her head. “I don’t want him to. He’s actually a good Master, and after what happened in Barrenwolf, I find myself playing both sides just for him.”
“You mean that mind-blowing orgasm I had was real?” Bethany asked incredulously.
“Oh hell yes! It has to do with his super powers, you know that of course, but that was real.”
Jack looked at Bethany and then laughed, “You’re getting wet just thinking about it huh?”
Bethany scrunched up her face and turned bright red.
“I’ll take that as a yes.”
“Well, if you wouldn’t mind, I still swing your way.” Jack said with a sly grin and a lick of her lips. “Thinking about that prison-fuck with Kyle’s got me all worked up too.”
“How long have I been out?” she asked.
“For a few weeks,” Jack replied.
“Well then, I could definitely use a good fuck,” Bethany said with a mischievous grin.
Without hesitation, Jack leaned in for a passionate kiss and pushed Bethany back onto the bed, pinning her hands against the headboard.
“Hey!” Bethany protested weakly.
“What?” Jack teased. “You seemed to like the way I handled you earlier.” Her words sent a shiver down Bethany’s spine as Jack continued her ministrations.
“I can see why they call you Red Rocket,” Jack chuckled. “You’re so horny and submissive right now, just like a ripe Red Delicious apple. Let’s see if my attention can make you...explode.”
Kyle touched down in Portland and he was greeted by his team at Gems Mansion HQ. A quick handshake with Jimmy and warm hugs from the Gems, but his attention was solely on one person—Scarlett. As soon as he spotted her among the others, he rushed to her side and enveloped her in a tight embrace.
“You must be Scarlett,” Kyle said with a smile, “I’ve heard bits about you, but I want to know everything.”
Tears were already streaming down her face as she hugged him back, whispering brokenly, “Dad. Dad!”
After holding her for a moment, Kyle pulled back and looked at her tear-stained face. “You really do look like me,” he chuckled.
She laughed through her tears, nodding and wiping them away.
“I have some important matters to attend to, but I want to spend time with you,” Kyle said earnestly. “Can we make that happen?”
Scarlett’s face lit up with excitement as she eagerly nodded and reached out to embrace Kyle once again. Her tear-stained cheeks flushed with color and her smile stretched from ear to ear. After a brief moment, she released him from their embrace.
“I’ll see you soon, Dad,” she said, wiping away a tear.
“Now, I need to speak with Devon about this whole future vision situation,” Kyle stated, shifting into business mode.
Jimmy chimed in, “Devon should be done studying by now. Are you ready?”
Kyle nodded resolutely. “Let’s go.”
“Come in, Jimmy,” A voice beckoned him to enter just as Jimmy’s hand hovered over the door knocker. He let out an exasperated sigh and shot a side glance at his brother,
“She knows I hate it when she does that,” Jimmy muttered softly, Kyle couldn’t help but chuckle.
Inside the bedroom sat Devon McKinley, reclined on the plush king-sized bed with her legs elegantly crossed underneath her, a hefty leather-bound book resting in her lap. Her intense gaze was fixated on the pages, a hint of frustration furrowing her brow. She tucked a lock of her long, sleek black hair behind her ear to keep it from obscuring her face.
“Hold that thought,” she spoke up, raising a single finger without looking up from her reading. “Just finishing this chapter.”
Uncanny how she looks like Future, the Norn…I mean she is her I guess? Kyle thought.
“You’d think that with her precognition she could time her reading a little bit more for our arrival huh?”
Jimmy introduced Devon proudly. “Kyle, this is my girlfriend, Devon. And, presuming she can be persuaded to lower the book for more than a few minutes, Dev, this is—“
“Your brother, Kyle Albinn,” she said with a yawn, finally closing the book and sitting up. “Or… is it Frasier now?” She extended a hand, smiling. “Either way, it’s very good to finally meet you.”
“Pleasure’s all mine babe. Always lovely to meet a new pretty face.”
Devon’s smile grew wider. “Wow… your brother is a real sweet talker, isn’t he?” Standing up, she walked over to Kyle, placing a hand lightly on his shoulder, leaning forward to whisper in a voice loud enough for both boys to hear.
“Still, I’d suggest you keep your libido in check while you’re here. You’re really handsome, Kyle… but there’s zero chance of us getting together.” She glanced at Jimmy, winking. “Oh. And we have another visitor staying with us, a lovely young woman with long silver hair that, unfortunately, much prefers women to men. I’d suggest you tread lightly around her as well.”
Jimmy suddenly groaned loudly, slapping his forehead. “Ah, shit… I nearly forgot! I promised I’d grab Lana a pint of mint chocolate chip ice cream on my way back! She’s probably going to kill me…” he said, glancing sidelong at Kyle, “and knowing her, that’s probably more literal than figurative. Sorry, bro, I gotta run out for a bit. I’ll leave you here with Dev.” Moving to the door, he paused, considering. “And Devon, he IS my older brother, so be nice to him, okay? Not everyone gets your… ahem… ‘humor’.” With that, he departed.
Devon sighed heavily, shaking her head. “Har de har har. I swear, if I didn’t love him so dearly…” Shrugging, she turned her attention back to her visitor. “So, Kyle, I take it you’d like me to help you learn to access and control your gift of Foresight?”
Kyle nodded. “How’d you guess? Did you foresee me coming here today to ask you to train me?”
Devon grinned. “Yes, actually. I saw this conversation happening between us a few days ago. And I also saw me helping you to hone your skills with this over the next several days. I know, I know—“ she said, holding up a hand to forestall his protest before he could even make it, “Rome wasn’t built in a day, you know. Heck, I’m not an expert in it myself, and I’ve had years…” She frowned slightly, sighing. “Okay, Skuld has had years, decades, centuries, millennia, of experience. Me, I’m still trying to understand most of the knowledge she imparted to me.” She shrugged. “Either way, I know enough to aid you in learning to control this ability.”
“Yeah, all that reincarnation stuff hurts my head. Almost as much as the inter dimensional travel and the Great Weave.”
“Okay, it’s a bit complicated,” she admitted. “You’ve talked to your mom, right? Lacie Fraiser was born a normal girl like me, in a normal average family, with no special powers or abilities—those came later. We are both members of the Nornir bloodline, however, and out of all the many descendants walking the Earth, I happened to be the reincarnation of Skuld, the way Lacie is the reincarnation of Verdandi.” She shook her head ruefully. “I didn’t even find this out until recently, when Tawnya Parkinson came to visit me. But when I went with her to Yggdrasil…” she sighed softly. “Never mind. The important thing is that I know who and what I am now. And in accepting this part of my heritage, I’ve begun to truly know myself a bit better now.”
Kyle nodded softly. “Yeah, I get it. And I really envy you for that. I’m still trying to get a handle on who I am right now. Geez… as myself and as a father, even. Ever since this whole adventure in time and space started, my future seems to be a complicated one. I’ve met four of my future children, all of whom are currently here, in this dimension with me.”
Devon nodded sagely. “Yes. I know. The Great Weave is in a state of temporal flux right now from all of the disturbances to this world. Our recent… um… ‘trouble’ created a weakness between the barriers of realities, and until my sisters and I can stabilize the Weave, things like this will continue to happen.” She grinned. “Luckily, you, Kyle, are apparently a necessary thread in the grand design. Your presence here is actually a point of stability rather than a hindrance. As such, I intend to aid you in any way I can,” her grin turned slightly wicked, “aside from the carnal option, that is.”
Kyle’s good-natured chuckle tickled the air, “You really know how to hurt a guy, you know? Still, I can’t help but admire Jimmy’s choice of mates. You are very beautiful, Devon. And smart, and funny. So, yeah, I can see why he’s so smitten with you.” Kyle’s thoughts turned to his own complicated relationships, his inner turmoil echoed in the mention of his “slaves” and their potential impact on his blossoming feelings for Bethany. Was this all due to the Jabberwocky’s tampering, or something deeper within himself?
“I’m not all eyes and dick you know. I’ve got a heart too.” Kyle continued.
“A heart that’s split in several parts figuring out all your new conquests and children?” She replied knowingly.
“Well I wouldn’t call them conquests—”
At that moment a bright flash erupted in the middle of the room. Kyle reacted instinctively, armoring up, pointing a blaster at the disturbance, which quickly resolved itself into an achingly attractive woman. Tall, with fine delicate features, long silver hair tied back in a ponytail, a flawless soft olive complexion, and a perfect hourglass figure, clad, barely, in a pale periwinkle blouse and hip hugger blue jeans, her long legs ending in a pair of stylish leather sandals.
“Forgive the intrusion, dear,” the woman began, “but it’s been more than three hours now, and I was wondering if that boyfriend of yours has… umm… oh, my,” she faltered, realizing they were not alone. Far from being intimidated, she merely raised an eyebrow, a slow smirk creasing her lips as she gave Kyle a critical once-over. “Devon, darling, far be it for me to criticize what one does in the privacy of one’s own bedroom, but I think perhaps you’re taking the notion of ‘sex toys’ a bit too far.” She licked her lips. “If dear James is not really ‘doing it’ for you these days, my offer still stands.”
Dev merely rolled her eyes. “Hah hah. You’re a regular laugh riot. You should have your own TV sitcom.” She turned and gestured lightly to Kyle. “It’s okay. You can power back down. She’s a friend… the one Jimmy spoke of earlier. Kyle Frasier, this is Lana LaSilvas, his teacher and tutor in the ways of the mystic arts. Lana, this is Kyle, Jimmy’s older brother.”
Lana blinked in surprise, her calm and composed façade vanishing momentarily as Kyle’s armor retracted, revealing the young man underneath. “Brother, you say?” she mused softly. “Well… I can’t exactly see the family resemblance… Plus, I thought Jimmy and Katie were Lacie’s only children?”
“Yeah, it’s complicated,” Kyle replied with a smirk. “It’s a long story, involving time travel, alternate realities, and other dimensions—”
“Okay, yes, very good then,” Lana replied dismissively, already seemingly bored of the conversation. “So, where is my errant student anyway? I thought I sensed him here a moment ago…”
“He was here,” Dev replied with a smirk, “but it seems he forgot something and had to rush back to the store.”
“Uh huh,” Lana sighed, shaking her head. “And here I thought he was supposed to have perfect recall. It’s from dividing his time on all those other pursuits of his,” she muttered in derision. “Genius intellect or not, a person can only handle so many distractions at once before they lose the ability to focus! I can respect the boy’s desire to finish his medical training, a noble endeavor in and of itself… but if he is truly serious about learning to control his magic, then he needs to stop going out at night to play super hero!”
“Right, let’s curb the desire of a struggling youth attempting to salvage and restore a city deeply embattled with crime and villainy. Saving people’s not noble at all!” Kyle said a little miffed by this woman. Just because she was drop dead gorgeous didn’t mean she could bad his well meaning half-brother.
Lana turned to glare at Kyle, but Devon merely nodded, adding her own opinion. “Lana, sweetie, you have a point. Jimmy is being pulled in a lot of different directions at once right now. And yes, all of them are suffering a bit because of it. He actually got a ‘B’ on his last test… his first B ever! And I know he’s not progressing in magic as fast as you’d hoped. But he’s doing the best that he can. Asking him to stop going out as Darklight would be asking him to stop being Jimmy Frasier. It’s who he is. He helps people. And its not a game to him, it’s his duty, his responsibility, to help those in need.”
“And you’re telling me that in a city this size, with other Supers flying and flitting about, his presence is so important that they cannot do without him for a few days to focus on his studies?” Lana challenged.
Kyle’s voice boomed through the room, cutting through the tense silence. “Yes, it’s true,” he declared firmly. “I won’t give some hackneyed speech about how one man can change the world, but I will tell you this: just earlier today, Jimmy and a group of brave individuals defended this city from a group of merciless villains who were determined to destroy it. And my daughter Scarlet was among them, fighting alongside them until the very end.” Lana’s expression darkened as she processed his words. “Your petty disagreements and squabbling about what truly matters pales in comparison to the importance of protecting and preserving life.” Kyle finished sharply, his eyes piercing through her stubborn facade.
Just then, the room darkened visibly, and a small black vortex appeared beside the bed, resolving itself into the familiar form of Jimmy Frasier. “I’m back. And I got the…uhh…oh, um, hi, Lana,” he said sheepishly, holding the pint of ice cream out. “So, uh… I see you met my brother, Kyle.”
Lana merely nods once. “Yes we’ve had words,” she replied with a smirk. “Come, James… we’re late for your training. We have a lot of catching up to do,” Jimmy lets out an audible groan, “but perhaps if you make sufficient progress, we might… taper off the lessons a bit.”
Jimmy’s jaw visibly dropped. “What? I’m not a beast,”
Lana replied defensively. “No reason to push you past your breaking point. Besides, you’re apparently very important to this city of yours.” She glanced sidelong at Kyle. “If you are willing to push yourself this hard, then the least I can do is be a bit more… flexible.” With that, she vanished in a brief flash of light.
Jimmy, stunned, glanced back and forth between Kyle and Devon, then shrugged, shaking his head. “Okay… when I get back from practice, one of you has GOT to explain to me what just happened. In the meantime,” he said, leaning forward to kiss Dev gently on the lips, “you two have fun.” With that, he also vanished, disappearing in a swirl of darkness.
Devon giggled. “Well, that was an interesting little interlude.” She extended a hand to Kyle. “So, shall we follow suit and depart as well? I have a chamber specially prepared devoid of distractions that aids in meditation. It will be much easier to teach you there.” Shrugging, Kyle accepted her hand, and then vanished with her as she teleported them away.
“Here we are,” Devon replied with a slight flourish, spreading her arms wide. “Hope you like it. Jimmy set it up for me with a bit of his dad’s tech. It’s really just a holographic representation of the real thing, but it does kind of set the atmosphere. And… it really helps.”
“Wow,” Kyle’s breath caught in admiration, taking in the intricate details and peaceful atmosphere of the room, a holographic recreation of Urdarbrunnr. Devon explained that it was created with some advanced technology from Jimmy’s father, but even as a mere representation, it emanated a sense of calmness.
“Okay. The first, and probably more important thing to know about reading the future is that it does not want to be read,” she said gently. “The future is… well, not alive per se, but I would swear sometimes that it’s sentient… that it knows when someone is attempting to change it and it fights back fiercely. That said… it IS possible to change the future. It is difficult, and hard to do, and many times, a novice given a glimpse of things to come trying to change it can be the very catalyst that brings about that future. That is why you must always be very careful with what you do with the information you glean.”
She sighed softly gesturing with a softly glowing hand, causing the waters of the faux well to ripple, an image appearing within the waters. “One of the first visions I received when I gained my powers was a vision of Jimmy getting shot. It was so vivid, so clear—my hand pulling the trigger, the flash of light, and Jimmy falling slowly to the ground. I was convinced that I had killed him.” She shook her head ruefully. “Obviously, that didn’t come to pass. And yet, it did. The events happened just as I saw them. I’d been brainwashed, controlled by a microchip in the back of my neck. I shot Jimmy, and he fell. But, he didn’t die.” Her smile returned. “I saw the future as it happened, but I misinterpreted it to believe I had killed him. The future is very tricky that way. Keep that in mind.”
Kyle nodded. “Okay. Got it. Be careful with how you interpret what you see. So… how do I go about seeing in the first place? Do I need to put myself in some kind of trance? Will the visions be completely random, or will I be able to control them at all? It would be kind of a nuisance not to be able to use it when it might actually be helpful…”
Devon grinned. “Well, starting out, it will be mostly random. It’s a lot like using a muscle you didn’t know you had—the more you exercise it the more control over it you’ll develop.” Standing up again, she walked around behind Kyle.
“It can be a bit… jarring at first. To me, it always felt a little like a seizure, your body locking up while your brain gets hijacked watching commercials. The best thing you can do is simply relax your body and mind, and just let it happen.” Her smile turned wicked. “As for how to make the visions start… you already have the power. You just need your inner eye opened.”
Holding up a hand, she tapped a long slender index finger lightly in the center of his forehead. “You just need a little… push.”
“Damn it,” Kyle muttered, his frustration evident as he stumbled back from receiving his visions of the future. His eyes darted around the room, trying to make sense of the jumbled images that flashed before him.
“What did you see?” I prodded, my curiosity piqued.
Kyle shook his head, rubbing his temples in exasperation. “Sex...I think with Katie? And some blonde girl I’ve never seen before.”
My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “That’s it?”
“That’s all I could make out,” Kyle replied with a defeated sigh. “Useless.”
“Sounds about right. These things are random, but surprisingly focused for your first time. You’re a natural it seems.”
Kyle grunted in frustration, “If this is considered talented, I feel sorry for those who aren’t.”
Devon gave him a little grin, “Not used to incompetency?”
“You don’t become leader of a semi-successful post-apocalyptic insurgency group by being constantly incompetent.”
“Right. You’re from…”
“Earth 27 apparently. According to Gene’s system.”
Devon wasn’t paying too much attention to him as she seemed to glance at something, golden strings emerged in front of her and she plucked one from the holographic air.
“Ah. There.” She said inspecting it a little.
“Is that me?” Kyle asked, peering over her shoulder.
“Not specifically, but you’re a part of this thread…that’s strange…” Devon said pondering, “Your part of the weave is…”
“What?” Kyle’s question hung heavy in the air, his words echoing off the gym walls. But Devon remained lost in thought, her brow furrowed and lips pursed as she processed the situation.
“What?” Kyle asked again, this time with more force, hoping to break through Devon’s reverie.
“Sorry.” Devon said, shaking her head, “Ok. So long story short, you’ve got some natural talent, but you’ve got some natural barriers. Who you are, what you’re trying to do, there’s a lot of unpredictability there.”
Kyle’s spirits deflated at her words. “So should I just stop training here?”
“Hardly. We just need to work harder!” She said with a smirk and a playful punch to the arm.
“Great.” Kyle said dejectedly.
“Hey! You are Jimmy’s brother! Same exact facial expression!”
“What are you doing?” A low, ominous voice sliced through the air, startling Bloodstone out of her thoughts.
She turned to see a pale-skinned woman clad in all black, with a dark indigo cloak draped over her shoulders. The bow strapped to her back gave off a menacing vibe. It was Erebos, one of The Jabberwocky’s enforcers, and she was not one to be trifled with.
“Caught red-handed, eh?” Erebos sneered.
“Erebos? Uh nothing! I—”
The phantom lady of darkness and shadow had been the primary way The Jabberwocky had gained his darkness powers, one of his personal favorites to use in combat. Erebos lived and hunted in shadows so it was no wonder that Bloodstone hadn’t sensed her presence. Erebos acted as one of The Jabberwocky’s enforcers and she was most certainly not to be trifled with.
“Don’t play kid. What are you up to?” Erebos scoffed.
“Well uh…you see…” she stammered, trying to think of an excuse.
“Look, I don’t care what you’re doing. Unless you’re directly threatening Master, then I don’t care.”
“Well it’s not a threat to him. I’m just seeing what he’s up to. Do you want to see?”
“Meh.” Erebos replied, “Not particularly. I’ve fulfilled my duty.”
Feeling relieved that her actions didn’t put her in direct danger, Bloodstone couldn’t help but feel curious about what Erebos meant by “duty.”
“What do you mean by ‘duty’?” she asked cautiously.
Erebos let out a dry laugh. “Mind control from The Jabberwocky. He made sure I follow his orders willingly,” she explained nonchalantly.
Willingly being a relative term. Bethany thought.
“Well you’ve got to know about this! All of us from Earth 28! We’re being erased from existence! The Norns have dictated it!” Bloodstone exclaimed.
But instead of panicking like Bloodstone did, Erebos seemed unfazed.
“What’s so funny!?” Bloodstone asked, incredulous, “We’re going to die! No worse, we’re going to be erased entirely!”
“Would that really be so bad?”
“Yes! I don’t want to die.” Bloodstone whined, then made a pouting face, “I couldn’t serve Master anymore.”
“It’d be nice in some ways.” Erebos replied pensively, “I wouldn’t mind being done with all this pain and death,” she mused.
Bloodstone shook her head in disbelief. “Please, will you help me steal this magical device? It could be our only chance.”
“Steal? What are you after?”
“I’m going to help Master. I’m going to steal this!”
“What’s that?”
“I’m not sure, but it’s some sort of doo-hickey that enhances magical power. He’s going to need it if he’s going to stop us from being erased.”
Erebos shrugged nonchalantly. “Nah, sounds like too much effort, perfect for a cheerleader like you though. Go wave your pom-poms somewhere else.”
Erebos made a brushing motion with a raised right hand as she walked out of the room, not looking back.
“Fine!” Bloodstone huffed and stormed out of the room. When she got on Master’s good side, she’d make sure Erebos would be wrapped around her little finger.
“Have you seen Kyle?” Mandy asked as she searched the crowded room
“Yeah he’s over there.” Diane said.
Diane pointed out Kyle to her fellow Beautiful Gem. Kyle and his daughter were sitting together on the couch, she was leaning into his chest and he was stroking her hair as they looked out the window absent-mindedly.
“Awww, he’s such a cute dad!” Mandy exclaimed.
“Scarlett’s gotta good father, that’s for sure. He’s a real charmer.” Diane said, “But we already pretty much knew that from your prior experiences.”
Mandy blushed, recalling her previous sexual encounter with Kyle a few weeks back.
“Let’s give them some space,” Mandy suggested, and the two girls left father and daughter alone to chat and enjoy each other’s company.
As Kyle absent-mindedly stroked his daughter’s hair, Scarlett spoke up. “Isn’t it crazy? I remember bits and pieces of you from the future, but now we’re the same age.”
“Yeah. It is pretty crazy. I wasn’t around much right? That’s what you said?” Kyle remarked.
“Yeah. I don’t really know why.” Scarlett frowned, “But you’re here now.”
A warm feeling spread through Kyle’s chest at her words. “Yeah, I guess I am.”
Kyle sat with his daughter in his arms, This is…nice. Weird and uncanny for sure, but holding her like this is somehow right on the deepest level.
Scarlett met his gaze and smiled knowingly. “I think this is what I always wanted deep down.”
“What’s that?” Kyle asked curiously.
“A father who was present in my life,” Scarlett explained.
She must have been thinking the same thing. Kyle thought happily.
“Well...I’m glad to be here now,” he said after a pause.
Scarlett looked up at him and beamed. “Thanks Dad.”
Kyle leaned over and kissed her forehead, a feeling of contentment washing over him. Being a father wasn’t so bad after all.
