The Jabberwocky

Kyle, Zane, and Scarlett weaved through the demonic chaos, blasts erupting from Kyle’s palms.

A shout pierced the din. “Oy, lad! Catch!”

Kyle whipped his head around, and with his free hand, snatched a baton-sized instrument from the air

Gene gave him a thumbs up as he punched the lights out of a demon himself, “It’s the Dimensional Tuner! It works! Determine the who’s and whatsit of dimensions!”

Kyle nodded in thanks as Gene turned his attention, along with Lacie and Eva, towards a giant archdemon stomping around River City Park. Their teamwork was impeccable, each one perfectly in sync with the other, no doubt in part due to Eva’s mental powers.

Speaking of teamwork, we gotta find the rest of my crew.

As they waded their way further into the city, it wasn’t long before they found the rest of Kyle’s friends helping civilians out of a collapsing building. Shatterstar and Tone were using their immense strength, holding up a massive chunk of what was once a skyscraper as Bethany, Jack, Meghan, Hack, and Nastia escorted or carried frightened but grateful civilians out of the rubble. As soon as the civilians were safe, Tone and Shatterstar gently let down the skyscraper as the rest of the building collapsed around them.

As they approached, the group of girls and Hack rushed over to greet the familiar faces. His slaves all gave him big kisses, and Bethany met him with a big hug. Even Hack reluctantly gave Kyle a hug.

“We’re so glad you’re back Master.” Karen said, “Thank you for allowing me to join you and your harem.”

Kyle, overwhelmed by the chaos and the sudden harem revelation, mumbled a response.

“Have you heard, Master?” Tone asked, “Of The Jabberwocky’s plans?”

“I mean world domination is on the table right?” Kyle asked.

“He’s trying to prevent all of Earth 28 from being erased.” Bethany explained, “Fates have him and his dimension on the out. He’s trying to stop it.”

A giant explosion rocked the city, causing the whole group to stumble or stagger slightly from the shockwave.

“It doesn’t matter what he’s trying to do, right now, we’ve got to just try and stop it.” Kyle said.

The group nodded in agreement, many seemed shocked at Kyle’s lack of confidence.

“Alright guys. Form up on me. I’m not sure if we can do this. But we’ve got to try.” Kyle commanded.

As his friends slowly formed up on his sides, they marched towards the center of the city where they knew the Jabberwocky was waiting for them.

* * *

They stood there across from each other, a full group on each side. Kyle with his, The Jabberwocky with his. They were glowing. Around them the cityscape was ablaze, fire and ashes burning around them.

Kyle recognized some of the enemies in front of him, Athena notably, as well as the group of futuristic people he had found in Agartha. There was also someone who looked distinctly like Tone, but wearing darker fetish themed gear, all latex. Of course the Jabberwocky was standing before him, complete with his creepy kabuki mask gleaming in the firelight and wielding none other than the Vorpal Blade in his right hand.

“It comes down to this Kyle!” The Jabberwocky smiled.

“I could say the same to you.” Kyle replied, his grip tightening on the newly materialized light sword. The air crackled with pent-up energy.

A tense silence stretched, broken only by the roar of the inferno. Then, Kyle lunged, a blur of blue and white. His friends followed suit, determined cries echoing through the ruined cityscape.

Speeding himself up as fast as possible, he made a huge swipe at The Jabberwocky’s head. By the time he arrived however, the Jabberwocky melted into the shadows as Kyle’s attack cleaved empty air. A dark tendril lashed out, catching Kyle by surprise. He spun, deflecting The Jabberwocky’s counter strike with a desperate swing of his light sword.

The Jabberwocky chuckled, Kyle gritted his teeth.

“There’s no chance for cheap tricks this time!” Kyle gritted his teeth. He unleashed a torrent of attacks—light constructs, energy beams, psychic blasts—anything to overwhelm his enemy. The Jabberwocky weaved through the assault, his movements deceptively casual. Kyle, however, sensed an opening.

“There!” he roared, unleashing his most potent energy blast yet. It struck the Jabberwocky with a sickening thud, sending him hurtling through the ruined buildings.

The groups stopped fighting for just a second, staring at the gaping hole that The Jabberwocky’s body had left in its wake. A stunned silence descended. Had they finally…?

“Alright.” The answer came a moment later. The Jabberwocky emerged from the wreckage, a twisted smile playing on his lips. “That tickled. But now it’s time for a little reversal!”

The Jabberwocky shed the pretense of a duel. He cast aside the Vorpal Blade, favoring swift, brutal attacks with his dark tendrils and unpredictable teleportation. Kyle fought back desperately, but the villain pressed the offensive.

Panic clawed at Kyle as he barely managed to hold his own. If I don’t…he’s working me over… there’s going to be—Shit! There!

The Jabberwocky had managed to exploit a weakness in Kyle’s own game, but as Kyle rapidly tried to recover, throwing up an amber shield, The Jabberwocky rushed past him, surprising everyone watching with the unexpected move. Extending his hand, the Jabberwocky summoned the Vorpal Blade to his grasp as he converged on Tone. In a flash, he had brought the crimson blade to the Vanir’s neck, wrapping his arms around her in a chokehold, blade digging into her soft skin.

“Decision time cutie!” The Jabberwocky chortled, “I’ll cut you a deal, I’ll stop doing everything, everything I’m doing, no evil, no shenanigans, no tricks. I swear on the Styx, the World Tree, the Great Weave, Hell itself, whatever you want—I’ll honor this deal.”

“What’s the catch?” Kyle asked, warming up another Omega blast as he bided his time.

“Oh if you take my deal, I kill the girl.” The Jabberwocky said with a sinister smirk, “And to consummate this deal, I’ll need a handshake.”

The world seemed to shrink for Kyle. He saw Tone’s terrified eyes, felt a surge of raw emotion—rage, fear, and an unyielding determination. With a snarl, he unleashed the Omega blast, the raw energy shattering the Jabberwocky’s kabuki mask. The villain recoiled, releasing Tone.

Kyle shook his head, “Fuck your deal. It’s go time!”

Kyle yelled at the top of his lungs, powering up even further than he thought possible, adrenaline and emotion fueling his powers. He rushed forward towards the fallen Jabberwocky and unleashed a devastating punch. The sheer force of Kyle’s movement caused everyone else around him to be thrown backwards.

Thwack!

That is, except for the Jabberwocky. Kyle’s punch, fueled by a desperate surge of power, connected with nothing but air. The Jabberwocky, a blur of malice, had teleported, reappearing inches from Kyle.

His mask lay shattered in the dust, revealing a face eerily similar to Kyle’s own, marred only by a jagged scar etching down his left cheek. Their eyes locked, a mirror reflecting rage.

“C’mon cutie! This the best you’ve got?” The Jabberwocky’s voice, devoid of humor now, dripped with condescension.

The next moment, Kyle was a ragdoll flung through buildings. Panic clawed at his throat. Where did this power come from?

He slammed into the pavement, his body screaming in protest. No! Keep it together! Focus!

His desperate pleas were drowned out by The Jabberwocky’s relentless assault. Kyle scrambled to his feet, a bloody mess, his armor shredded, barely dodging another tendril attack.

Kyle slammed his fists into the ground, righting himself once again, barely managing to sidestep The Jabberwocky’s dark tendril blast. But before he could make another move, he was hit again, this time by a powerful blast of light. Kyle’s technopath armor was battered and shattered, most of his body was exposed now. His face was clear for all to see fresh blood running down his cheek forming a river from the gouge on his forehead. It took all the energy he could muster to stand. This was it. The Jabberwocky, slowly, victoriously, made his way over to Kyle.

“Finally! All this time! It comes to this Kyle.” The Jabberwocky said, “Just you and me— or me myself and I if you prefer.”

The Jabberwocky’s smile spread across all his face, from ear to ear. The Jabberwocky loomed over him, a predator savoring its prey. Kyle felt a hand grip his, and a jolt of pain ripped through him. A dark purple glow emanated from his own body, feeding into the Jabberwocky’s crimson energy.

He’s draining everything from me? What is this?

The flow reversed. A surge of dark red energy flooded Kyle, his screams turning to anguished howls. His vision blurred, darkness creeping at the edges.

Now he’s…what is this? What is he doing?

Kyle’s thoughts were becoming muddled, his entire body was slumping and limp. This is it.

The Jabberwocky whispered in his ear, so quietly it was almost beautiful, “’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves…“

Kyle’s eyes flickered for a second, The Jabberwocky’s words were fading, he mentally shook himself, out of the corner of his eye he could see a battered and bleeding Tone cry out to him as she struggled to right herself. He couldn’t even move, but he tried to whisper to her, to say something, anything, but it was silence too soon. Then Darkness.

* * *

Tone screamed out for her Master, cried out in anguish. She was watching him die right before her eyes. They had the upper hand for just a moment, but the Jabberwocky had proved to be too powerful.

With a Herculean effort, Tone forced herself upright, ignoring the throbbing pain. An invisible pulse thrummed around the Jabberwocky, a maelstrom of energy fueled by Kyle’s life force. But will, raw and desperate, fueled her. She stumbled forward, fists pounding a futile rhythm against The Jabberwocky’s side.

The Jabberwocky just laughed. Tone could see that Kyle was passed out now, his face looking quite gaunt. Soon the others joined her, Bethany, Jack, Karen, everyone was there, pounding away at the Jabberwocky as best as they could but the Jabberwocky didn’t even seem to notice. He cried out with pure ecstasy

“BEWARE THE JABBERWOCK MY SON! THE JAWS THAT BITE, THE CLAWS THAT CATCH!”

A surge of crimson energy erupted from the Jabberwocky, a shockwave that sent Kyle’s allies sprawling. Tone, gritting her teeth, fought to rise. She couldn’t give up. Not oner her Master. Not yet.

The Jabberwocky’s roars of triumph were unintelligible now, just booming, shaking the ground with every roar he made.

But then, a sudden flash of light pierced the gloom. A woman, statuesque and blonde, materialized amidst the carnage. With a flick of her wrist, she unleashed shimmering strings of energy that wrapped around the Jabberwocky, binding him in an unseen cage.

Silence descended like a shroud. The Jabberwocky’s screams died in his throat, and the energy drain ceased. The battlefield held its breath, waiting for the next move in this bizarre game.

* * *

The woman strode over, picking up the Vorpal Blade with practiced ease. Her glowing strings still held the Jabberwocky captive.

“Hey teach, only you can do this. He’s your counterpart overall.” She said.

Kyle, barely conscious, slumped against the rubble. “I can’t—” he rasped, his arm collapsing beneath him.

A sardonic smile played on the woman’s lips. “Don’t get lazy on me now, teach! Here,” she said, leaning down. “Don’t say I never gave you a gift.”

She planted a big kiss on his lips and Kyle felt the rush of energy seep back into him and for just a second he was in her head.

Lucy…Albinn?!

He stumbled to his feet, the Vorpal Blade heavy in his hand. With a guttural scream, he charged. The blade arced through the air, a blur of white against crimson.

One, two! One, two! And through and through the vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with his head, he went galumphing back.

Kyle sank back to the ground, exhaustion claiming him. Laughter bubbled up, morphing into a shaky, joyous sob. It was finally over.
