Title: The Manager

By: Hannah Quinn

CHAPTER FOUR

“Mmm, no. I can already feel this one is going to have the urge to turn.” The blonde examined, her hands pushing against the handle as the cart. Sure enough, it turned to the right at just the simplest shove, “Why don’t we try the next one?” Tonya, a stickler for detail, had spent the last several minutes in front of the supermarket trying to pick up the “perfect” cart. It was the same song and dance she had a mind for performing whenever she and Kristy had more than just a couple things to pick up. While Tonya didn’t mind spending the extra few minutes, her girlfriend had tried her best to tolerate it. “I would pick this cart,” Tonya continued, hand on her chin as her figure looked every so perfect in her white, long-sleeved turtleneck, “But the wheels are going to whistle. Whistling wheels are going to drive all the attention towards us.” She said this as she wore nearly comically huge navigator shades, while her blonde hair was done up effortlessly into the most divine ponytail, “And do we really want that?”

It was annoyingly adorable. Annoying that Tonya just had to take her time with everything, and adorable that Tonya just had to take her time with everything. “Noooo…” Kristy groaned, yet still with a smile, the irony of Tonya’s statement wasn’t lost on her, “But maybe you shouldn’t wear these.” Reaching over Tonya’s shoulders, she carefully snatched the arms of her sunglasses and propped them off. “We can’t have you looking too much like a movie star.” The duo were en route to the next Wrestle Parade program but had just decided to take a small detour. Although life on the road held seldom options for food, Tonya wasn’t necessarily favorable for the “fast” kind. They needed to replenish their supply. “Tell me T’,” she put on her best “Hollywood” tone, “Would you have me?”

Tonya smirked, huffing into a smile as she playfully rolled her eyes. It was just before eleven, the busy “lunch time” crowd having yet to hit critical mass. “Of course~.” As Kristy leaned towards her, Tonya gave her a light peck on the cheek. She wanted so desperately just to wrap her arm around her waist and mosey on together into the supermarket, but the light kiss on the cheek was the furthest she could allow herself to go. “So. I think this is the one. Right here. This one.” She pulled out her seventh cart, the metal legs practically gleaming underneath the bright fluorescent lighting. If it wasn’t for the coupon book in the child’s seat, one could have assumed it was brand new. “Perfect.” She began to push it at different 45 degree angles, the wheels moving as they appropriately should every time.

Kristy, wasting no time, dumped her purse into the basket. “Autobots, roll out!”

“Remind me why we’re in the pet food aisle again?”

“The Boy Scout motto is to always be prepared.”

“But we’re not in the Boy Scouts!”

“That doesn’t make it any less applicable, Tonya!”

“Hello, girls.” It was like a blast of Arctic air on an otherwise cheerful jaunt to a random supermarket. There, her backside resting against a particularly generous bag of cat food, was Sirena Zigana. She had the kind of stare that could freeze you in place, and wore a smirk that suggested she was very much aware of that particular fact. The woman with the jet black hair and alluringly dark eyes stood up, clad in all black, sticking out like a sore thumb in her attire even though no one else seemed to notice that she was here. No one else but Tonya and Kristy, who were both rocking a deer caught in the headlights look even though this was the brunette’s first introduction to the vixen. “So nice to see you both again.”

Kristy seemed frozen, but not with fear. There was a look of almost dreamy confusion on her face, her eyes scanning Sirena up and down. Once her eyes reached the floor, she noticed the shoes that Zigana wore. They seemed awfully familiar. Why, they resembled a pair that she seemed to have misplaced lately. She remembered when Tonya had given her those shoes for her birthday. She loved them so much. Skater style with Marvel characters splashed across the canvas fabric. They were her favorite pair. Must have left them in a hotel in some city. Shame. But Sirena looked great in them. She was compelled to tell the stranger as much. “I really...like your shoes...but...have we met?”

“Hmm?” Sirena had moved in on the two of them, regarding Kristy with a bit of disdain that came across as indifference. This didn’t seem to faze either woman caught in her tractor beam.

“You said, ‘So nice to see you both again.’ But have we ever met?”

Sirena didn’t answer this. She instead smiled broadly, eyes twinkling. This response seemed to satisfy Kristy, who returned the smile after a pause. A voice in the back of her mind alerted her to the fact that she hadn’t blinked in some time, but Marvel ignored it. This enchanting woman was very pretty. It was hard to think about anything other than looking at her, and listening to what she had to say. “I was wondering if I might have a word with you both. Apologies for our paths crossing on short notice, but I very much believe that you will like what I have to say.”

Tonya had gone speechless, frozen as her grip increased on the handle. Why couldn’t she just turn, and walk away? Just seeing Sirena and Kristy interact was bizarre to her, a hint of panic settling in as her lie from a week ago resurfaced her into mind. It wasn’t just the only dream she had of her either, Sirena’s purple hues making it difficult for her to even look away. “I’m sorry” she managed to say, her own interactions with Sirena a secret between the couple, “But we’re not...interested.” Every word felt like a struggle, Tonya suddenly feeling guilty, as if she was doing something wrong. As if she wasn’t being a good girl.

Sirena’s smile didn’t waver. In fact, she didn’t seem to be paying attention to Tonya at all. Her focus was affixed to Kristy, still frozen in front of her. As she continued to smile, the brunette returned an unsure one back. “I’ve already given you my pitch, Tonya Reese. And judging by your...companion’s demeanor, I take it you haven’t shared the information. Pity. But I can atone for that here and now.” She stepped forward. For a moment, it looked as though she was going to touch Kristy the way she had Tonya last week, but she held off. “Might I talk to you for a moment, Kristy Marvel?” After the question was asked, she appeared to lose her balance, which seemed odd for someone so confident and put together. There was a hissing sound, almost a guttural language, that she made directly into Marvel’s ear, reaching out to grip and squeeze the shoulders as she caught herself. “Sorry about that. So clumsy. Dear me.”

“Oh, no worries, it’s okay!” Still cheery, Kristy turned her focus away from Sirena’s killer pair of sneakers and nodded, almost apologetically. “We’re all not perfect,” she flashed a glance at Tonya, as if to tell her “why didn’t you tell me?” before turning her attention back to the raven-haired woman. “But we’re both here now, so why not? I’m all ears.” After Tonya’s discourtesy, giving Sirena a moment of her time was the least the couple could do.

Sirena had ignored her, and Tonya couldn’t help but feel a slight hint of jealously. Why was she so involved with Kristy? Wasn’t Sirena the one wearing a “I Want Tonya” shirt just a week ago? “Stop it Tonya, stop,” she thought to herself, trying to snap the feelings away, “What are you thinking?”

“Thank you for being so...accommodating. This will only take a moment of your time, dear.” Sirena was certainly a close talker. Nearly face to face with the brunette, she ran down her plan for Tonya nearly verbatim to the pitch in the bathroom from a week away, right down to the repetition of “I want Tonya.” There was an almost extra emphasis on the “want” syllable as she spoke, her eyes still twinkling and her lips still curved into a smile. She was certainly very persuasive and persistent. You had to give her that at the very least. “Your...friend has rebuffed me twice now, dear, but perhaps you’d set her straight for me. Do that, won’t you? Set her straight for me. Tell her it’s a good idea.” Her tone was far more commanding than it ever had been with the blonde.

Feeling fidgety, Tonya began to lightly tap her foot on the floor as her fingers now danced upon the handle. Couldn’t they just stop talking already? What was the point if Sirena wasn’t actually giving her atten—“Stop it Tonya!” she again reminded herself, turning her attention the adorable looking cat pictures scattered about the aisle. “Look at you cuties, without a care in the world, being all happy and excited....” she whispered, reaching for a bag of cat food as she caressed its non-existent fur.

“Tonya, Tonya...Tonya!” Kristy snapped her fingers in front of her, catching her attention. “Did you really turn the offer down?”

Confused, Tonya rose an eyebrow. Did she seem...happy?

“I mean seriously, did you even listen to Sirena?” she nodded, side-stepping away as if to present the woman to her. “It’s a fantastic idea! I mean, who’s better? Just look at her.” Kristy eyed Sirena up and down, starting from her head and down to her rad kickers, “I always hate seeing you so distraught after a loss, but I think Sirena really has something good here. Can you just imagine the tandem of you and her?”

Gee, did Tonya ever.

Quickly, Kristy stood at her side, wrapping an arm around her girlfriend’s shoulder as she held out her free hand, as if to frame the scene. “A classic scenario of opposites attract. People wouldn’t even fathom the duo of Tonya and Sirena. They wouldn’t seen it coming! Sirena and Tonya? No, Tonya and Sirena.” She paused, pointing an excited finger into the air. “Your names even sound great together! I can’t even decide which one sounds better! How about that?!” Breaking her connection, she sandwiched herself between the women again. “She’s giving you the world here, Tonya. Together you can finally give Celeste she’s deserved for the last couple…the last few years, no, give her what she’s deserved forever!

Stunned disbelief, Tonya wasn’t even sure if Kristy knew what she was saying.

Sirena had an even more smug and satisfied expression, now turning her gaze upon Tonya for the first time during this particular meeting. “Be a dear and listen to some sense. Listen to your...tag partner, won’t you? Good girl.” She winked, and walked off. “I await a decision. Sooner rather than later, ladies! Ta ta for now.” With one pivot to her right at the end of the aisle, she was totally out of sight.

As their eyes finally met, Tonya felt a soothing wave of comfort consume her. Her foot stopped tapping, her grip even loosened on the handle as she couldn’t help but smile. “Oh god, yes.” she thought, her inner-voice full of sultry and satisfaction as if she finally garnered the attention she thought she’d crave. “I’m such a good girl, I love being her goo—no, Tonya. STOP!” Eyebrows furrowed, Tonya lightly bit her bottom lip as she, again, tried to box away her thoughts. Just what was happening to her? Kristy was her girlfriend. Kristy was right there. Why couldn’t she prevent herself from thinking about Sirena?

“We’ll consider it,” she managed to spout, still trying to piece together her own feelings as she gave Kristy a smile. “You’re joking, right?” she objected, as soon as she felt Sirena wasn’t within earshot. “You know management won’t have it. We can’t do this. She doesn’t fit in with this.” She pointed at herself, “Wrestle Parade is all about preserving my image, do you really think they’ll approve of having that,” she pointed at the direction Sirena left, “with me? It won’t happen. I just can’t see it happening.”

“So it’s all about what you want, is it?” Kristy said this quietly, looking down and away from the woman she loved deeply. Seemed like everything Tonya did lately was hurting her. “Cool. I won’t trouble you with silly things like my opinions, then. Just thought I’d bite the bullet and let you do what was good for your career. Forget it.” She left, following the path Sirena had cut moments earlier.

Tonya had allowed the heat of the moment get to her. She wasn’t quite sure what it was. The frustration that Sirena kept popping up, or her feelings whenever she had. Just what was this? It wasn’t attraction, but there was definitely an allure and Tonya couldn’t allow herself to give in. Kristy Marvel was her girlfriend. Her girlfriend that just stormed off because of something she didn’t mean to express. Sighing, she shook her head and sunk her forehead into the palm of her hand. She couldn’t remember the last time she and Kristy were such on edge. “Hopefully she’s waiting in the car, please be waiting next to the car.”

Kristy never arrived. The rest of the afternoon had been Marvel-less, Tonya’s worry escalating by the second. How could she have been so stupid? Just driving around town, it felt as if Tonya was on search for a lost puppy, checking every street hoping to even catch a glimpse of her. She could feel as if she was an hour away from submitting a “lost” campaign on milk cartons.

Unfortunately, she had to give up the search. It was time to report to the arena, and she had to assume Kristy had gone straight there by herself. She was half right. When she got past the usual check in and production crew, she spotted Kristy in the locker room. But she wasn’t alone. Far from it. The brunette sat on a bench, staring intently at a scarf held aloft by…Sirena?!

It was true. Kristy was staring at the scarf with an intensity Tonya hadn’t seen from her since she’d been fighting the final boss in Dark Souls 3. In fact, her girlfriend seemed to be paying such close attention to it that she hadn’t noticed the arrival of the blonde. However, Sirena and her ever-observing eyes, had. “Hello, dear.”

Kristy blinked, looking up at Tonya. She smiled, apparently all bad blood forgotten. “Hey there! I suppose I should explain. I got Sirena here a temporary contract. Tonya, look, I know you said no, but I really think this is a great idea for you. She’s a much needed change, and can guide you through these rough waters better than I can. Okay? So she’s gonna manage us tonight against Emilia Hart and Leah Dawson. Just a temporary thing. No harm in trying, eh? What’s the worst that could happen? We lose harder? I’m not sure that’s even possible.” She laughed, still blinking rapidly as if waking up from a nap even though Tonya had interrupted a conversation between herself and Sirena, and not a nap.

Sirena nodded. “You should listen to her, Tonya Reese. You should listen to us.” The tall woman with the dark hair stared down at Kristy, who smiled up at her. “Glad you like my scarf, dear. Old family heirloom. Fascinating, isn’t it?”

“Yes...fascinating,” Kristy said, attention unequivocally back on the scarf.

“No, it’s not fascinating!” Tonya couldn’t believe what was happening. Kristy had disappeared! Shunned Tonya out of her life for the entire afternoon and for what? For this?! Not only that, but she decided to go behind her back anyway? “Are you kidding me right now Kristy? You know how I felt about this, about her, and what do you do?” She pointed directly at Sirena without even keeping mind her manners. “Is this payback? This must be some type of revenge plot. I can’t believe you right now! I know I hurt you, I felt I hurt you, but did I really hurt you this badly?! KRISTY.” Beginning to get a sense that she wasn’t listening, Tonya reached for the scarf and snagged out of her hands. “KRISTY! Are you even listening to me? What is even with you?!” Aggressively, she threw it onto the floor, “You had me worried! I didn’t know where you went. Where you had gone. If you would even be here, and THIS is where you are?!” Taking a moment to catch her breath, Tonya shook her head, exchanging her glares between her and Sirena.

Kristy didn’t respond, her eyes following the scarf to the ground as if she couldn’t look away. Sirena stepped in between them, fixing her gaze to the blonde. “Let’s calm down. Just breathe and relax. In through the mouth, out through the nose. Take a moment to relax. Relax with me, Tonya Reese. No decisions should be made when we are angry and hurt. Won’t you relax?” She placed a reassuring hand on the young star’s left shoulder. “Relax and talk to me.”

She wanted to object. She wanted to brush Sirena’s warm hand off her shoulder. Tonya wanted to scream bloody murder and give Sirena a piece of her mind. But...she couldn’t. The moment Sirena’s hand caressed her shoulder, Tonya could feel her anger slowly dissipate, her breathing coming back to normal as she began to feel a soothing, warm sensation. “Who...who are you?” she questioned, her eyes unable to look away from her. The feeling wasn’t like anything she had felt before. To feel the weight of the world wash away in an instant was oddly gratifying. “No, no, no.” Shaking her head, Tonya brushed her hand away and took a few steps backward. “I don’t know who you are, or what you’re even seeking but…” she glanced at Kristy who still seemed absolutely entranced by Sirena’s scarf, “If it will make her happy,” she honestly didn’t want to make matters worse with her girlfriend, “We’ll do it. Just this once. One night only.”

“Good girl,” Sirena purred, licking her lips. She turned, collecting her scarf off the ground and clicking her tongue. Dusting off, she placed it back around her neck, walking past the blonde and an almost confused Kristy. “Glad you’re seeing things my way. See you out there.”

“Tonya?” Kristy sheepishly asked, any volume in her voice struggling to surface as she blinked a few more times. However, it didn’t seem like she was listening as Tonya kept her focus on the exiting raven haired beauty. Nodding to herself, she maneuvers herself through the haze and gently rubbed her shoulders. “This is going to work, okay? Trust me. I wouldn’t have vouched for her if I didn’t feel something. This is going to work!”
