Chapter 5

When Cassie got home, she didn’t wait, tossing her jacket into the closet and running to find her favorite place with the reorg manual.

I’m not going to be fired. I’m ready to accept new ideas.

She sat down on the couch and opened the book, making certain that she opened it to the second chapter.

A Clean Office is a Happy Office.

Cassie stared at the front page of the new chapter. There was a woman, in an office… a manager, from her clothing, smiling up at Cassie from the page and holding… A feather duster?

What the fuck is she doing with a feather dust—Cassie looked down at the words, the swirling pink symbols surrounding them and found her eyes drawn to the subheading.

Remember, it’s important to listen and understand…

She licked her lips. “I need to listen and understand…” Cassie said and the words were just so fucking right. As usual the way the lettering was angled, it was easier to read the words aloud than it was to sight read.

But that was fine. In fact, Cassie was enjoying the way she was hearing the words as she read them. Because that meant she was both reading them by sight and saying them, and that was just great for memorization.

A thrill ran through her body at that thought, almost like she was being congratulated.

“An office-lady might not think that cleaning is important.” Well it isn’t. I have—“But she would be wrong.”

Cassie blinked, but she kept reading.

“Think about your office. Think about the men working in it, putting in hard hours trying to encourage people to do business with you.”

Cassie bit her lip. Like Tom. Tom didn’t gossip. In fact, it had only been the reorg that had convinced her that she should be more disciplined. That she needed to work harder.

Cassie shivered, but the words just kept going and she obediently read them.

“Is it right that you leave them to face a dirty office?”

No, but that’s what we have—

“But you can’t leave it to the cleaning staff, and only a very greedy office-lady would consider that.” Cassie paused, but the words just carried her along. “After all, doesn’t the cleaning staff work hard as well? Don’t you think they have better things to do than just clean up after people who leave dusty desks and dirty floors?”

Cassie shivered, remembering all the times she’d left stuff for the cleaning crew. Not caring that they had important work to do themselves, and if they’d not been able to get to her stuff, then well, the room would be dirty.

The idea was revolting.

“Just imagine some client coming in to realize that the staff is so lazy that they leave the work to the cleaners, and don’t care how they make the men look.” The word “men” was red, standing out against the rest of the pink words, staring at Cassie like a prosecutor…

And as it did, she remembered every time she’d been lazy, just left cleaning to everyone else.

“Because of that, we need to understand that it is our duty to serve the office by helping keep it clean. We can even help the men keep their offices clean because well, we may find that we office-ladies have a gift for cleaning.”

No, that’s… That’s…

“In fact, why don’t we try it now?”

What?

“The feather duster is on your table.”

Before she finished the words, Cassie stared at her table.

There was a feather duster on it.

But she hadn’t seen one…

Or maybe…she hadn’t noticed?

“Now let’s pick it up and start cleaning our room. You may think a duster is old fashioned, but it’s very attractive, and it’s also quiet. Because why would we disturb the important work of the businessmen with a loud hand vacuum…” Cassie nodded. That made sense.

“And most importantly, you can enjoy it. The process of cleaning lets you clear your mind, relax… fall into the pattern of working and being a good employee. Relax and prepare yourself for new duties… being a good girl.”

Cassie thought there was something strange about those last words. She wasn’t a good girl, she was a business woman… But the twisty twirly words were just rolling around in her mind…

And would it be so bad to be a good girl…

She got up and picked up the duster, and suddenly she could see all the little spots of dust on the walls on the table, the kind of thing that no man would approve of.

She started dusting.

Back and forth.

It was relaxing. Just go back and forth. Dusting and cleaning. She bent over. Sweeping the duster over what she’d once considered pristine, but now it needed some good dusting.

Back and forth.

Don’t think.

Just do.

Because that’d make the men happy. That was what a good office-lady needed to do. Be a good employee…

Be a good girl…

At that thought, Cassie giggled, the sound loud in the room.

Then she got back to dusting. Back and forth. After the table, the furniture, then the walls, and then every other room.

She’d been thinking of watching a TV show. But that wasn’t important.

Back and forth.

Because she had to be a good girl and get ready for the reorg.
