A(Never)sary

By Sen Oluguat

Leo wanted the proposal to be perfect. It was hard to believe he and Mary had already been together for almost 5 years. They had met in the first few months of freshman year at the start of university life. Thinking back to all the great dates, the emotional support and camaraderie, and the healthy sex life—Leo was sure he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Mary. They were already living together, and Leo would soon be getting his Master’s degree—everything seemed to point to this being the right time.

Leo had racked his brain trying to think of the perfect way to propose—he wanted it to be something unforgettable. A story he and Mary could eventually tell their kids. So he decided to go to Devon for advice. Leo showed him the ring he had picked out (moisanite—her favorite stone) and then explained the situation.

“What if you took her to the place you two had your first date? Sam’s Diner or whatever it was called...” Devon suggested.

Leo shook his head. “I mean, that’s a good suggestion, but it’s not enough. I want something big, you know?”

Devon rubbed his chin in thought. “Well, what if you didn’t just go to the same place, but the same mental space as well?”

Leo tilted his head in confusion. “What do you mean? Like have us both role-play like it’s our first date?”

“No, no, no. I mean... well,” Devon paused clearly unsure of what to say. “Okay, I hadn’t really told you about this, but I’ve been practicing hypnosis recently. I think—”

“Woah, hypnosis!? No way, man.” Leo said, crossing his arms. “I don’t want anyone messing with my head. Or Mary’s for that matter.”

“Hear me out man—the idea I’ve got isn’t as crazy as it sounds.” Devon said.

Leo didn’t say anything. He had to admit he was intrigued.

Devon nodded. “Alright, here’s my idea. I’ll give you guys two hypnotic triggers. Trigger one: when you guys walk through the doors, you forget each other. As far as you’re concerned this is your first date. Trigger two: When you two see a waiter bringing a ring in a champagne glass, you’ll both remember everything. That’s when you propose. Nice trip down memory lane, followed by a cute finale.”

Leo thought about it. It did actually sound pretty romantic.

“Alright,” Leo said. “I’m in.”

The hard part was figuring out how to hypnotize Mary without her realizing. Devon brainstormed a few ideas, but eventually settled on using subliminals—done through her car radio. A week before the fateful evening, Leo installed the mod that Devon had rigged together in Mary’s car. Leo wasn’t much of a tech wiz, but Devon had made the whole thing very easy—almost plug and play.

As Mary drove to and from work over the next few days she had a sense something was off, [“When you walk through the doors of Sam’s Diner, you will forget your relationship with Leo."] but she really couldn’t put her finger on it. [“You will remember the past few years, but not your relationship with Leo."] She was really having trouble concentrating on the podcasts she usually listened to, so she switched to radio. [“It will be just like your first date. Emotionally, you will be in a similar place to where you were during your first date with Leo."] She switched stations a few times, until she found a Top 40 station that wasn’t playing a song she was already sick of. She couldn’t say why, but she felt way more distracted then usual. [“You will be as immature and naive as you were when you first dated Leo.]

On the way home, she again found that she couldn’t concentrate on her podcasts. Not too unusual, sometimes her brain was just fried from a long day of work, and she couldn’t handle podcasts. [“When you see a milkshake glass with a ring in it, you will remember everything about Leo."] She worked as an automation tester for Big Data, and it wasn’t always the most exciting work. But the pay was good—which was good, because she was helping support Leo while he got his Master’s. [“All your love will come flooding back, and you will fondly remember the date you had—no matter how it turned out."] It was odd, she definitely felt out of it. But in a different way from her usual post-work slump. [“You’ll be feeling refreshed, and happy. Ready to say your true feelings to any question you get asked."] Oh, well. The human brain was a mystery sometimes...

When Mary got home, Leo could tell that the mod was working. She seemed tired almost—like she had just woken from a nap. Well, it was definitely like that, but different as well. Her responses were slightly slower, almost imperceptible so—if Leo didn’t know her as well as he did, or if he wasn’t looking for it, he probably would have missed it. He silently celebrated. This plan was going to work. It was going to be the best proposal ever.

Friday rolled around and Leo was more nervous than he had ever been. Everything was falling into place. Devon had hypnotized him yesterday, and he had already given the engagement ring to one of the waitstaff who would be working the next day, with instructions to put the ring in a milkshake glass and bring it by after dinner. As he and Mary got dressed for the date, his stomach felt like butterflies. What was it going to be like—being strangers for the evening? He remembered falling in love with her the first time, getting to know her, working through arguments and difficult times. He remembered back to how clueless he and Mary had been when they first started dating.

He remembered asking her out. She had been flirting with him for a while, and he had been too dense to see it. Finally, driving back from a study session, she had grown tired of the subtle approach and took a more direct approach.

“I think you’re really cute,” she had said.

He remembered his awkward silence in the following seconds. He hadn’t known what to say. He hadn’t really had a relationship before. He remembered being literally chased for a dance by Allison in middle school (he had still been a little too immature to accept even puppy dog romance at that point), and Lauren’s clinginess at lunch in high school. He had eventually gone to a dance with Lauren, and even had a good time, but they didn’t even kiss at the end of the night. He was used to being kind of stupid when it came to love and relationships...

Finally, he had to break the silence. “Do you want to, uh, maybe, uh, go out some time?”

She had actually said no the first time. Both of them were nervously trying to navigate first relationships, it seemed. But a week later he asked again, and they had finally gone to Sam’s Diner together. So nervous. He cringed looking back on it. But it had been were everything started.

He remembered the first night they had had sex, several weeks had passed at that point and the most they had gotten up to was kissing. Both of them had been virgins, and one night Mary insisted that they both get drunk. He didn’t actually know where she had gotten the bottle of vodka, but he had been on-board. He was only 19, and had never drunken alcohol before. They were making out, and it was sloppier and sexier than it had been between them before. She kept slowing things down, and it was torture for him. He was hornier than he had ever been, and his clouded brain made him say something transparently with ulterior motives:

“You shoul’ drink more! It’sh liquid courage.”

She had pushed him away a little taken aback, and insisted they stop after that. He had respected her wishes, and put a good few feet between him and her while he mentally kicked himself for saying something so stupid. He had ruined things with his drunken boldness. Or so he thought. A few minutes later, she had nervously called him to the bed, and asked him if wanted to have sex. His well meaning parents had bought him condoms, and he remembered saying “yes” and nervously fumbling with the box, and then the packaging and then finally the condom itself.

The whole thing had been so clumsy, and so hot. He was almost sad he couldn’t relive that as well. Their sex life nowadays was much better, thanks to years of experience—but you never forget that magical first time. An ironic thought to think as they both stepped through the doorway of Sam’s Diner.

Leo suddenly let go of Mary’s hand. He could barely believe he had just been holding it. Oh gosh, she looked so pretty. The dress she was wearing showed off her cleavage nicely, but he was too polite and too scared to look for more than a few moments. Her makeup and face were like an angel’s and her soft voice sent shivers down his spine.

He was so busy panicking that he didn’t realize how nervous she had suddenly become as well. Mary focused on the lingering feeling of his hand in hers. It hadn’t lasted long, but it had been nice holding Leo’s hand. She felt a little guilty about this whole thing. She did like Leo, at least somewhat. He was... nice. But she was kind of using him. She didn’t really see a future with him—she had just grown frustrated with being a virgin at 18. Mary blinked in confusion. Wait a second, that wasn’t right at all. She wasn’t 18—she was 22! Had she really spent four years doing nothing but school work? Was she really living on her own, and working without having ever kissed a boy? She remembered being 18 and wanting to reinvent herself at the start of freshmen year. And then... nothing. She panicked a bit realizing how much time she had already wasted. She was still nervous and guilty about this whole thing, but she suddenly had the resolve she needed. She was going to fuck Leo tonight, one way or the other.

Leo pulled out the chair out for her to sit in. How gallant. She thanked him and sat down. She didn’t have a ton of experience flirting, but she tried her best to make herself more appealing throughout the conversations. Leo was normally pretty blind to things like this, but she was making it so obvious. Touching his hands throughout the conversations, pushing out her chest or leaning over to give him a peak down her shirt. He was finding himself turned on, but he just sat up straight and tried to pretend that there wasn’t a tent in his pants as the conversation unfolded. This went on for most of dinner, before some milkshakes arrived.

“Uh, we didn’t order a milkshake,” Mary said.

“It’s on the house,” the waiter said winking.

Both of them looked at each other in confusion. Oh, well. A free milkshake is a free milkshake. Except Mary had noticed the tent in Leo’s pants, and she didn’t want to wait for a milkshake. She whispered something in his ear.

“Hey, why don’t we skip dessert here and do dessert at my place, if you know what I mean.“

To someone more experienced it was a laughable line, but Leo would have said yes to almost anything she said at this point. He clumsily pulled out his wallet and set some twenties on the table. That was probably enough. He grabbed her hand (wasn’t he bold now!), and led her to the car. On a whim, he leaned in and kissed her. Both of them kept the kiss going for a few seconds—the feeling was electric and new to them. When they finally pulled away for breath both of them were flushed. They couldn’t wait to get home.

Luckily, the drive was short. Leo was surprised at how familiar Mary’s place looked, but his brain was definitely not the organ receiving the most blood at this moment so he let her lead him to the bedroom. When they both got there, they both paused staring at each other, not quite sure where to take things next. Mary felt her nervousness overtake her desperation for the first time in the night. Was she really doing this? Leo tried to kiss her again, but she pulled away.

“Why don’t you, uh,” she grabbed his hand and guided it under her shirt.

Leo was nervous as he felt the warm touch of her skin, and then felt the silk lace of her bra. He was actually touching a boob!

“Well,” Mary said nervously. “Do you, you know, like it?”

Leo gulped. “It’s incredible. Can I see them?”

Mary hesitated, before nodding and slowly pulling off her dress.

Leo looked at her in her bra and panties. She looked incredible! She wasn’t done though.

“Why don’t you...” she didn’t know how to say it, “Help me with this.”

He didn’t need to be told twice. He went for the clasp of her bra, and fiddled with it for a few seconds before it finally came off. He let out a gasp.

He had seen pictures of boobs, but to see them in person. He looked at her breasts, and tried to imprint the image in his mind. The skin was slightly lighter than her arm or face, and her nipples were incredible.

He didn’t know what possessed, him, but he asked “Can I suck them?”

She was taken aback. Quite involuntarily she pushed his head away, and took a few steps back. “Maybe we should slow down a little. I’ve never, uh, done anything like this before.”

Leo looked disappointed. How could he have said something so stupid? They both stood there awkwardly. He was still wearing his clothes, and she had never felt more naked in her life. Mary mulled things over. She was so close! Was she really going to ruin things this close to what she wanted. A mixture of desperation, horniness, nervousness and guilt fought each other in her head. Finally, she decided she couldn’t pass this opportunity up.

She made eye contact with Leo, and tried to put on her sexiest voice. It still came out nervous and awkward. “I’m sorry, I think I’m, uh, ready for more. Why don’t you join me on the bed. Without your, uh, your pants.”

Leo perked up. Little Leo perked up. He didn’t need to be told twice, was soon naked from the waist down and it was Mary’s turn to gasp. She wasn’t a prude, but porn wasn’t even really in her vocabulary. She remembered diagrams from health class of “Penises.” But seeing one in the flesh. She realized that “penis” was too medical. What she was staring at was a dick. A prick. His manhood. She lowered her mouth towards his dick.

“Do you mind if I suck it?” she asked.

Leo nodded slightly, and she slowly moved her lips over his throbbing member. The sensation was odd, but she kind of liked it. She especially like the look of pleasure on his face. She started moving her head up and down. She pulled her mouth away,

“Does that feel good?”

He nodded vigorously, and she went back at it. She was surprised when in what felt like no time, she could feel hot, salty substance filling her mouth. She hadn’t even thought about what she was going to do at the end of this. She made the split second decision to swallow, and looked up at Leo. He seemed surprised by her power play.

“Are you ready for round two?” she asked, slinking on to the bed and spreading her legs.

He was more then ready, and when she felt him slide into her she let out a loud moan. This felt amazing! He started moving in and out, and she found her eyes widening as the pressure built up between her legs. He lasted much longer this time, and when he finally blew his load she was soon to follow. The feeling was incredible. They both collapsed back into the sheets panting and sweating and being aware of the of every touch of the other person’s skin.

All her guilt had evaporated in a cloud of pleasure. How could she feel bad about using Leo when it felt this good? They both fell asleep in each others arms.

Mary was woken by Leo trying to sneak out of bed.

“Oh, shit. I didn’t think you’d, y’know, wake up. Sorry.”

Mary shook her head. “No need to apologize. This was... fun.”

Leo nodded. “So, uh, can we do this again some time?”

Mary bit her tongue. That had been amazing, but now that she had gotten a taste she couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like with a more experienced partner. She honestly felt like the thing that had been holding her back was being a virgin this whole time. Now that Pandora’s box was open, did she really need Leo?

“Look, Leo. You’re really nice. And this was great, but I’m not really looking for anything serious. I might be up for doing this again sometime, but I really want to see other people, you know? Find out what’s out there.“

Leo was crestfallen. It might have been the unfamiliar chemicals coursing through his head, but he felt like he might be in love with Mary and it kind of broke his heart to hear her talk this way. Well, he was 23 and had only just lost his virginity. It’s not like he had a lot of negotiating room.

“Oh, okay,” was all he said. He finished putting on his pants and left without saying goodbye.

Mary did quite well for herself in the next few months. It seemed like every day she found a new guy to take home. She was becoming quite the experienced lover, and had found a few guys who were huge and amazing in bed. She was thankful for Leo’s “help”, and stayed friends with him, but after a few dozen guys she knew she’d never need him again, not even as a friend with benefits.

Leo for his part took the whole thing pretty hard. What little confidence had allowed him to ask Mary out in the first place was shattered. Devon had asked him how things went with Mary, and he had said “not well” and changed the subject. Devon didn’t know what to say, and hoped he hadn’t been responsible, but he knew not to pick at a sore spot so he dropped the subject until Leo was ready to tell him everything that happened.

Leo had tried Tinder and OkCupid, but it was exhausting. His already small reserves of confidence were whittled away by rejection after rejection. He eventually lowered his standards and did succeed in getting a few dates, but nothing ever became of them. He was resigned to his fate of being forever alone—and that Mary had just used him. Maybe there was a girl out there for him? Probably not, though.

A letter arrived in the mail from Sam’s Diner. Leo was confused at the small bulge in it. Curious, he opened it, and out popped a small moisonite ring.
