“Well, Kendra, I think we’ve made some great strides today.”
From her cross-legged position in her chair, Kendra flashed a brief smile and tipped her head slightly to one side, blonde strands of hair spilling across her face. She pushed them aside with the back of her hand.
“Yes, I suppose we have. I do feel better.” She paused. “Look, Fred, I’ve been thinking about what we discussed earlier. I know it’s important, but I’m still not ready for you to hypnotize me. I’m just not sure about that yet.” Still using the back of her hand, she absently rubbed her nose.
“Of course! I wouldn’t have it any other way. Always remember, Kendra, these sessions are for your benefit. We’ll only move as fast here as you want to. Besides, until you want to be hypnotized, it wouldn’t work anyway.”
Kendra smiled again.
“I really think I’ll be ready soon. I just need a little mu..” She broke off and stifled a long, sudden, yawn.
“Oh dear. Have I been that dull today?” Fred smiled sardonically.
“No! No, of course not. Like you said..” Kendra yawned again, even more widely. “..we made great strides today. I feel a lot better, really.” She blinked her blue eyes muzzily.
“Good. Well, forget about the hypnotism for now. Kendra, what you said a minute ago was wrong. It’s not important. It’s just another tool we have available, and if the time comes when it can be used, great...” Her head began to drop, her eyes closing as he looked down at his notepad. “Anyway, I see we have a little more time today, so why don’t we talk some more about your.. Kendra?”
Kendra snapped her head up sharply, eyes wide.
“You still with me?” Mock-teasing tone.
“Yes. Of course.”
“It is important that we stay focused here.”
“Yes, I know. It’s just..” Her eyes fluttered shut and she dragged them open with an obvious effort.. “...so tired all of a sudden.”
“Now, Kendra, you can sleep when you get home. I really think that you should stay awake.”
“Yes, I want..” Again her head drooped “...but I can’t seem to...to... what’s...” her voice was thick, heavy.
“Kendra. I insist that you stay awake.“
“..uuhnn..” Her head remained down, her chin resting on her chest.
For a long moment, he stared silently at her. Then he spoke.
“Kendra? Are you asleep?”
“If you’re asleep, Kendra, nod your head.”
After a moment, her head bobbed.
“That’s right. You’re sleep. Deeply, deeply, asleep. But you can still hear my voice, can’t you Kendra?”
Another weak nod.
“Good. Very good. Now Kendra, listen carefully. In a moment, your eyes are going to open, and you’re going to act exactly as if you were awake. You will even think that you are awake. But you will in fact still be asleep. Even more deeply asleep. We’re going to talk, and as we do so, you’re going to find it harder and harder to keep thinking you’re awake. Your eyelids are going to get heavier and heavier, and you’re going to get sleepier and sleepier. Go even deeper into sleep. The more you fight it, the faster you will fall into sleep. Do you understand?”
The nod was almost imperceptible now.
“Good. Open your eyes Kendra.”
Her head rose up and her eyes opened. She blinked, and looked over at him. He spoke.
“I think we’ve made great strides today, Kendra.”
From her cross-legged position in the chair, Kendra flashed him a brief smile and tipped her head slightly to one side, blonde strands of hair spilling across her face. She made no effort to push them away.
“Yes, I suppose you’re right. I do feel bet...” She broke off and gave a jaw-splitting yawn.. “...but like I said before, I’m just not ready to be hypnotized...”
