Life’s A Beach...

by J. Darksong

ch.1)

As I stood there, staring blankly at the wide open expanse before me, all I could think was: what the HELL was I thinking?

The look of horror on my face must have been evident, as my two companions glanced at me with obvious concern. “Uh, Gwen? You okay?” Jan asked, frowning. “You’re looking a little shellshocked.”

Turning to face her, I gaped at her, as we stood just outside the Palms Hotel, in beautiful sunny Miami, Florida. “Gee. Ya think?” I asked her, sarcasm dripping from every syllable. “You brought me... to the beach! The BEACH!”

“Well, yeah,” Tina replied, shrugging. “We told you where we were going on vacation when we asked you to come along. You said. ‘sure. no problem’.”

I groaned aloud. “I thought you were JOKING!” I exclaimed loudly, causing a group of people walking by to peer at us strangely. Sighing, I waited for them to walk by before continuing in a slightly calmer voice. “I thought you two were pulling some kind of prank on me, just messing around, you know?”

“Huh? I don’t get it. Why would taking you along with us on vacation be considered a prank?”

“We’re at the BEACH!” I reiterated. “You know, sun and surf?” I gestured emphatically to myself. “I. Am. A. VAMPIRE! We do not do sunlight! And guess what the beach happens to have an abundance of?!?”

The other two young heroines glanced at each other. “Okay. I guess you have a point,” Tina conceded, “But still, you’re a Daywalker! You’re out and about during the day all the time! Sunlight doesn’t bother you at all!”

I resisted the urge to slap my forehead. “I never said sunlight doesn’t affect me,” I answered tersely. “It doesn’t KILL me, at least not in normal amounts, but it sure as hell weakens me. Being in direct sunlight drains me, literally burns through my reserves.” I let out a soft sigh as they digested that bit of information. I suppose it was my fault for not being clear on the issue. Still... you’d think they might have figured out that, resistant or not, bringing a freaking VAMPIRE to the beach was a bad idea!

“Look, it’s fine,” I said after a moment, turning to gaze out at the beach once again, staring at the gentle ebb and flow of the waves. “It’s not a catastrophe or anything. I’ll just need to, well, feed again a bit earlier than expected to remain my nice, happy-go-lucky self. And I brought a few bags of O+ with my luggage, so while I won’t exactly be happy, I’ll be just fine.”

“Oh, okay, that’s good,” Tina replied, letting out a sigh of relief. “And Gwen, we’re really sorry about this. Honestly, we had no idea. We... well, we just assumed...”

“Yeah,” Janika cut in, sheepishly. “And I guess you know what they say about assumptions.” She let out a sigh as well. “Well... so it’s not a total loss, Tina and I are determined to make sure you have fun on this trip. We’re here for three days, after all,” she added, and she slid a hand down to grab the hem of her blouse, while Tina did the same, smirking. “I’m sure we can find some kind of activity that you’ll like.”

I raised an eyebrow at that, glancing back. “Oh? Such as... ooooohhhh...” I trailed off, eyes going wide as I spied my two companions. In the brief interim I’d been staring out at the ocean, they had shed their travel clothes, revealing a pair of very enticing bikinis underneath. Despite myself, I swallowed a bit, a few beads of drool running down my chin. I have to say, bikinis are truly a marvel of mankind. In the past few months, I’d seen Jan and Tina completely naked a few dozen times, as well as in various stages of undress. And yet, seeing them virtually naked, with just a few tiny triangles of cloth covering their most tender spots, leaving very little to the imagination, had me utterly enchanted.

And, of course, they knew instantly what effect their clothing choices were having on me. Smug little temptresses. I was the dominant in this relationship, yet they knew all too well how to get me wrapped around their delicate little digits. Heh... not that I was planning to fight against the notion this time, mind. “So, ladies,” I purred softly, eyes hooded, “what exactly did you have in mind when you mentioned making sure I had fun on this trip?”

“Well,” Jan replied, moving up to take my left hand, as Tina took my right, both of them ‘accidentally’ nestling my arms in the sweet supple valley between their breasts, “if we’re going to spend the entire day lounging and playing on the beach, then we should make sure you’re nice and well fed first.”

I blinked at that, as Tina nodded in agreement. “Yeah. And why bother with the freeze-dried, prepackaged stuff,” she added in a sultry voice that made my toes curl, “when you can get it willingly from the source.”

I swallowed again. “And... you’re both okay with this? With me feeding on you?” I asked, just to get confirmation. “You know it’s going to leave you feeling drained for a few hours afterward...”

“Of course,” Jan replied instantly, kissing me gently. “We’re both heroes, you know... we’re a pretty resilient lot. And it’s better for us feeling a little bit winded for an hour or two than you, Gwen. We’ll just grab a cookie and some juice from the hotel cantina and we’ll be just fine!”

“Besides,” Tina added with a heavy blush, “it’s no secret that Jan and I... really reallyd enjoy the whole feeding process.” She kissed me as well, eyes as hooded as my own. “And, really, there’s no big rush to hit the beach, is there? I vote we spend some more time in our hotel room...”

Well, definitely no argument from me there. Still holding hands, I lead the girls back inside and up to our hotel room.

Three hours later, the smile still hadn’t fully faded from my face as I sat my cute bubble butt down on my beach towel. I sat in the shade of a very large sun umbrella, decked out in a bright yellow t-shirt and cut-off blue jeans shorts, my bare toes buried in the sand. I’d expected to be bored to tears, just sitting there on the ground while my two friends played and frolicked like a couple of kids. Far from it; people watching at the beach was actually quite interesting. For one thing, there was a wide variety of people wandering around, men and women of all sizes, shapes, and races. A rather large brunette woman in a bright purple one-piece lay on her front a few feet away, sunbathing. Several kids were situated nearby working on what I guessed was supposed to be a sand castle. A few buff macho guys were playing beach volleyball a bit further east of my position. And several sexy scantily clad teenage girls were splashing and playing all along the water’s edge.

Call it bias if you want, but in my humble opinion, the two sexiest girls were my two partners, and watching them at play was a real delight. Janika was a true daughter of the sun, simply lavishing in the bright sunny day, enjoying the streaming ball of blazing death shining down on her, and soaking up every evil ray of sunlight like a sponge. I wasn’t sure precisely about how her powers worked, exactly. Hell, neither was she, really. I know they worked differently from that OTHER sunlight-based heroine, Luminaire, aka, Katie Ann Frasier, who apparently we had to thank for this little vacation. (Apparently, this was supposed to be a weekend getaway for her and her two companions, but something had apparently come up, and unable to cancel, she’d simply gifted the reservation to Tina instead.) Luminaire was basically a walking, talking, living sun, nice as far as powers went, but a little sad on her part, since she literally couldn’t tan.

“Yeah, it kinda sucks,” she’d admitted when asked. “My body absorbs sunlight like a plant soaks up water, it’s completely harmless to me, so my skin never gets darker. And believe me, I’ve tried.”

Her analogy was a little bit off, with the whole plants absorbing water thing... but I got the gist of it. Apparently, Sunbeam was able to tan, though, as, after a few hours at play, her skin had taken on a noticeable bit of color. I admit it... I was actually a tiny bit jealous of that. I also couldn’t tan... for more obvious reasons. Spend too long under the sun, and the only color my skin would turn would be a nice crispy charcoal black. But I didn’t begrudge my friend for having her fun.

Ah, and speaking of fun. A wide smile crossed my lips as Tina made her presence felt again, letting out a loud ‘Woohoo!’ as she slid seamlessly back to the shore, dismounting her surfboard to land skillfully back on dry sand again. Splash, as one might guess, had a definite affinity for water, and it certainly showed. The Miami beach waters were actually fairly calm and tame, but it didn’t matter in the slightest when you had the power to manipulate and control water with your mind. The sexy dark skinned beauty attracted quite a crowd of admirers as she surfed the ocean with a skill professional beachcombers would envy, doing ridiculous flips and curls, showing off her acrobatic skills to rounds of whistles and applause.

I found myself wondering idly where she got so good at surfing anyway. I mean, Midas City wasn’t exactly a coastal town like River City. It’s not as if she went surfing on the regular, either. Unless Midas had some kind of large oceanfront area that wasn’t shown on any map, she must have come by the skill naturally...

It might be interesting to visit her hometown sometime. Midas City, the famed burg, the ‘City of a Thousand Supers’, as it was known. Granted, River City wasn’t exactly a slouch in that department, either, but it wasn’t our city motto or anything. And while I wasn’t exactly an expert on the place myself, Tina had regaled both me and Janika with tales of her city’s glory, of the heroics and perils of their city’s champions, as well as her own fascinating stories growing up there. I recalled the whole scandal with Chronos back in the day, with that famous mogul, Jesse Colloton, who turned out to be a megalomaniacal mastermind enslaving Supers to do her bidding. Since its dissolution, things had apparently become somewhat quieter, news-wise, aside from the usual issues with the Syndicate, a major crime organization, and the occasional female abductions.

Of course, as I knew only too well, just because a city wasn’t making national news on the regular didn’t mean things were necessarily peaceful. I still wanted to visit, though. I’d love to get a chance to meet some of their famed heroines like that silver-skinned heroine Luminaire is always going on about...

Damn.

And just like that, it occurs to me that Jan and Tina were right. Maybe it was the sun already doing a number on me. Or maybe it was simply leaving the city, getting out to a new place for a change. All my life, I’d stayed in River City, heck even before it officially WAS River City. I’d never left, had never had a desire to leave, to travel and visit other places. Granted, at first, it was a safety thing, then later, a comfort thing... but after a few decades, it had simply become the place where I stayed. I’d balked about leaving to come on vacation, and the girls had called me out over it, saying that once I actually got out and saw more of the world, it would ignite a desire to see more of it. And now, here I was, contemplating, seriously considering taking a trip somewhere else.

Fuck. I hate it when they’re right. Of course, if I mention wanting to go anywhere after this trip, they will never let me live it down. Yeah... fuck it. I was definitely hypnotizing them both when we got back home to make them forget ever having that conversation. Sighing, I picked up the book I’d brought, opened it to the bookmarked page, and decided to clear my mind and indulge in a bit of literary enjoyment.

* * *

“YEAH!! THAT! WAS! AWESOME!” Tina yelled triumphantly as she walked over to her best friend and partner, planting her surfboard upright in the sand next to her. “Damn, I fuckin’ love surfing!”

“So I noticed,” Janika replied, grinning just as widely, hugging her and kissing her deeply for a long moment. “So, should I be worried?” she asked teasingly, gesturing to the rather large crowd of onlookers. “After such a dramatic showing, it’s only a matter of time before you decide to give up the hero thing and decide to join the professional surfing circuit.”

Tina laughed. “No chance of that, Janika-babe. Surfing is just a hobby, pure enjoyment. Doing the hero thing with you and Gwen is my true calling. Nothing could ever pull me away from that... or from you guys.” They kissed again, then she turned, glancing back towards the front of the beach. “How’s our girl doing, by the way?”

“Meh, pretty good, I guess,” Jan replied with a shrug. “I waved at her a couple of times and she waved back. She certainly doesn’t seem to be suffering or anything. Hell, she’s reading her book at the moment, so I think her only complaint would be being bored.”

“Well, boredom is fine as a complaint,” Tina reasoned, dropping down onto the sand next to Jan. She shook her hair idly, tapping into her powers to draw out the water from the surf, instantly drying it. Jan sighed, rolling her eyes at the showing off, but Tina just grinned. “What? Can you blame me for flaunting my powers just a tiny bit?” she asked. “I’m basically Aquaman, and we’re finally here at the ocean. Of course, I’m gonna indulge myself a little.”

“Oh come on, you’re not Aquaman,” Jan replied back, grinning. “For one thing, you can’t talk to fish.”

“Well, actually I can,” Tina replied, her voice and expression so serious that Jan blinked in surprise. “The problem is, they don’t talk back to me,” she added after a brief pause, pausing her lover to groan and take a half-hearted swing at her. Before she could reply, however, she paused as a large shadow fell over them both. Glancing up, she found herself staring into the smiling face of a large, broad-chested, well-tanned blonde man in red swim trunks.

“You a professional?”

“Excuse me?” Tina asked, blinking.

“You know, a pro surfer?” the man asked, gesturing with his chin at her surfboard. “My mates and I saw you shreddin’ those waves earlier. That was some seriously sick and gnarly shit, man!”

Tina glanced at Jan, who just grinned, amused. “Um... yeah, thanks,” she replied. “But no, I’m not a pro.”

“Really? With moves like that, you sure should be!” the man said emphatically. “Seriously! I competed in the Big Wave Invitational three years ago, and did pretty well, came in fourth, but the way you were curling it out there, you would have taken the top spot easy!”

Tina blushed slightly. “Heh... I rather doubt that. As I said, I’m no pro. I just surf for fun, yanno? I’m really not interested in competing—”

“Ah, nonsense!” the man replied, cutting in. “You’d be great! Tell ya what... why don’t we grab a drink or two and discuss it?” he offered, flashing her a killer smile. “Trust me, babe. I got some connections, and you would be a star!”

Resisting the urge to roll her eyes, Tina decided to nip this in the bud. “Sorry, I’ll pass,” she said politely. “As I said before, I’m not interested in turning pro.”

“Well, we could have that drink and talk about other things instead,” the man continued, nonplussed. “C’mon... what do ya say? I’d love to learn more about the beautiful surfing goddess standing before me.”

Despite herself. Tina laughed out loud. “Wow... you certainly don’t give up easily, do you?” Shaking her head, she gestured to her side. “In case you didn’t notice, I’m with someone!”

“Bring ’er along,” the man answered, still grinning. “The more the merrier. Even if she’s not a surfer, your friend is pretty hot as well.”

Janika chuckled as well. “What she means is that we’re ‘together’ together,” she clarified, leaning forward to kiss Tina deeply, leaving no room for misinterpretation. The man gaped for a moment, watching enviously as they kissed, blushing deeply by the time they finally separated. “That said, I wouldn’t mind having a drink or two with you, sport, as long as you realize ahead of time that it won’t go beyond that.”

“Er, yeah, um,” the man mumbled, glancing away. “On second thought, I, er... have someplace else to be right now. Maybe another time,” he muttered, walking away. The two women glanced at each other, chuckling.

“Well, I have to give him points for being persistent,” Tina remarked once he’d left. “And he was pretty charming... for a guy.”

“True,” Jan replied with a nod. “I think I’d have given him a chance if I swung in that direction.” Her grin returned. “Unfortunately, I am kind of shallow. I only like hot babes that can rock a two-piece string bikini the way you do.”

“Oh? And what about Gwen?”

“Hey, I’m sure she can rock that style of bikini as well,” Jan replied. “The hard part would be getting her to actually wear it.” They chuckled at that, before glancing back at the beach. “Heh. Good. She’s still reading. Sometimes I forget about her supernatural hearing and sight...”

“Same here,” Tina admitted. “So... I’m thinking of heading back into the water for a nice swim. Wanna join me?”

“Sure, why not? Sounds fun,” Jan replied, climbing to her feet, dusting off the excess sand. “I’ll race you! Last one in is a rotten egg!” With that, the two lovers sprinted back across the burning sands, heading to the ocean.

“Wow. Is that a book you’re reading?”

I glanced up to find a tall, thin, young man with dark curly hair standing near me. He wore a pair of glasses on his face, a pair of navy blue swim trunks at his waist, and was holding an iPad under one arm. “Yeah,” I replied with a short nod. “A book. A big one too, with no pictures.”

The boy chuckled aloud. “Those are the best kind. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but personally, I prefer the words instead.” I nodded, a slight smile creasing my lips. I kind of liked this guy. “So what are you reading?”

“The new Tom Clancy,” I replied, holding up the cover for him to see. He nodded, whistling in appreciation.

“That’s really cool,” he replied. He was impressed. I was starting to like this guy more and more.

“My grandpa reads Clancy all the time,” he added with a grin. Huh. Okay... so I was in the same category as the guy’s grandfather? Liking him a little less now. “I haven’t read much of his stuff myself,” he added, “aside from the ones they made movies out of. You know, ‘Hunt for Red October’, ‘Patriot Games’, and ‘The Sum of All Fears’...” Okay, well, shit, my opinion of him rose back up again. “Oh, and of course, I’m a fan of the games!”

“Games?” I asked, eyebrow raised.

“Oh yeah! Especially Splinter Cell,” he answered, grinning widely. “Sam Fischer is so totally badass! All of my friends give me shit about it, calling him a ‘knock-off Solid Snake’, but I say that Sam and Snake are completely different. They both have their own appeals, and their games are both good. I just happen to like Splinter Cell better.”

I nodded. I was vaguely aware of Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid, though they weren’t exactly my preferred genre of video game. “Well, I’ll have to take your word for it. I’m a bit more ‘old school’ with my gaming... and hell, with most things, as if you couldn’t tell,” I added, gesturing to the book in my lap.

“Yeah, I can tell. But ya know, technology isn’t so bad. My tablet has a few hundred books stored on it, plus with wi-fi and a music player, it’s like an entire entertainment system all in one thin, slim, easy-to-carry container. Books are great and all, but when you’re done with that one, you have to go and find another one, or carry around a stack of them whenever you want some variety... ohh! Uh oh... aw, shit!” he yelped suddenly glancing down at his tablet. “Dammit... battery warning, my tablet’s about to die! I need to go plug it in.”

I couldn’t help but laugh aloud. “Yep, that’s the one major failing of all technology,” I crowed. “Running out of power. Guess that makes the score Books, one, Tablet, zero.”

The guy chuckled ruefully, nodding. “Okay, you’ve got me there. Listen, I do need to head back to my room and recharge this thing before it dies... but it was nice to meet you.” He extended a hand. “I’m Adam.”

I took his hand, shaking it briskly. “Gwen. Nice to meet you, too.”

He gave me a nice smile, then waved as he turned and headed off down the beach. “Hope to see you again sometime, Gwen!”

I sighed softly, returning to my book. The guy wasn’t a bad sort, but I wasn’t looking to hook up with anyone besides the two friends I had accompanied on this trip. Still, talking to him was a nice little interlude. He did have a point, though, I had to admit, as a few minutes later, I finished my book, closing it with a soft sigh. It was only the first day of our three-day vacation, and in my boredom, I’d just finished reading a five-hundred-page book.

Well... damn.

I guess I should adjust the score to Book-one, and Tablet-one, and call it a draw.

Luckily, just then, my two lovely ladies returned, apparently having finished swimming. “Welcome back,” I greeted them, as they wiped themselves off with their towels. “Had enough of the big blue sea for now?”

“Yeah, definitely,” Tina replied with a sigh. “All that activity worked up a bit of an appetite, though. What say we head back to the hotel, change, then head out to grab some food?”

“Hell, yeah,” Janika replied, “I second that! I am starving!”

I’d already had my feeding before we came down to the beach, so I was good for the time being, but while drinking blood sustained me, it wasn’t exactly the most satisfying meal. I was actually looking forward to sampling some of the local seafood along with Jan and Tina. “Sounds like a plan to me,” I agreed, grabbing my beach towel, and folding up my umbrella. “C’mon, let’s head back and get cleaned up before we head out to dinner.”

* * *

“Hey there, beautiful!”

A slight frown marred the dusky-skinned brunette’s lovely face at the unexpected interruption. Raised the dark sunglasses from her eyes, she peered up into the smiling face of the interloper, a large, tanned, barrel-chested man with blonde hair wearing scarlet-colored swim trunks. “I saw you sitting there, basking in the sun, looking lonely,” the man continued, “and I thought to myself, ‘What a tragedy! Such a lovely young woman sitting there all alone’! So I thought to myself, ‘Eric, my boy, you can’t let such a vision of loveliness lie there and languish all by her lonesome!’ So I decided to come over and say ‘Hi’.”

“Yes, and you did,” the woman replied curtly, placing her sunglasses back down, lying back in her chair. “Congratulations. Now you can leave and continue on with your day.”

The man blinked, a bit put off by such an abrupt dismissal. “Ah, y-yes, but, I haven’t gotten the chance to know you yet, dear lady,” he continued on, amping up the charm. “What say we go somewhere and have a drink together? Out here, in all this heat, you must be just dying for a drink.”

“Not at all,” the woman replied simply. “I’m quite fine as I am. In fact, I would be even better if you simply left.”

The smile finally left the man’s face. “Geez... just trying to be friendly, yanno?” he murmured, shaking his head. “Man... just can’t seem to catch a break.” He sighed turning to walk away. “Is it just me, or is every hot girl in this place a lesbian?”

The woman went stiff. “What did you just say?” she asked, sitting up, sunglasses raised again.

The man, heedless, just shrugged. “Nothing. Just saying how every hot babe I’ve met today all seem to be man-hating lesbians. Well, except for that surfer chick, at least she was nice about it. But, I mean, I work out, eat right, sculpt my body into this masterpiece... but what’s the point if I can’t find a girl to appreciate it—uuurrrkk!!”

The woman scowled deeply. Her arm was stretched out before her, hand clutched into a fist. A few feet away, Eric stood, staring down at his legs in disbelief. The sand had moved, shifted, and reformed, molding itself into a large human-shaped fist, which had grabbed him around the waist, holding him tight. “Do not presume to speak down to me, boy,” the woman growled, gesturing with her hand. Eric gasped, wincing in pain as the giant mound of sand around him tightened its grip. “I am no lesbian. Truth be known, I have no interest in sex with women or men.” She smirked, her lips twisting. “Why should I, when I have found no one on this earth whose beauty can compare to my own?” Her smile twisted back into a scowl again. “As for you, and this body you seem so proud of...”

“H-h-hey! What the hell?!?” the man yelled, as he found himself lifted up into the air, the fist-shaped sand becoming an arm, rising up from the ground. “What is this? What’s going on-aaaahhH!” The scream tore from his lips as the giant arm suddenly slammed him down onto the ground. The air blew from him as the impact forced it from his lungs. Grunting, he rolled over, twisting himself into the fetal position, only to find himself lifted up again. This time a pair of giant sand hands grabbed him, pulling and squeezing him painfully.

“Oh, what’s wrong?” the woman asked, taunting him. “That big strong body of yours not so useful right now, is it? And you were so proud of it, too,” she said, laughing cruelly. With sadistic glee, she gestured idly with her hands, watching as the poor hapless man was beaten, punched, squeezed, and slammed repeatedly into the ground. When he let out a soft weak groan as she released him, she chuckled aloud. “Not so cocky now, are you, big man?” she asked, leaning back into her sun chair again. “I said I wanted to be left alone, but you didn’t listen. Well, now I’ll be alone again,” she replied with a soft sigh, “since you’re about to leave me in more ways than once.”

The man let out another soft groan, as the sand surrounding him began to rise, covering him up. He managed another weak soft whimper, struggling in vain, just as the sand rose above his face. The sand rippled, and shifted fitfully for several seconds, before finally going still, and the large odd-shaped lump slowly smoothed over, becoming flat and level once more...
