One key factor in this outcome is the extensive conditioning and supervision provided by GUMS. The guardsmen are constantly monitored and their behavior is carefully controlled, leading to a sense of dependence on authority figures. This dependence, in turn, reduces feelings of stress and anxiety, as the guardsmen are assured of their place in the societal hierarchy.

Furthermore, the guardsmen have no personal property, as all of their possessions are owned and controlled by the Guard. This eliminates the need for them to worry about financial stability or the accumulation of wealth.

“The guardsmen have no need for material possessions,” explains B-7006-142-184, a guardsman who has been with the Guard for over a decade. “All of our needs are provided for by the Guard, from food and shelter to healthcare and entertainment. This lack of personal property also serves to reinforce the guardsmen’s dependence on the Guard and their willingness to sacrifice for the greater good of the institution. “We are not individuals with our own wants and needs,” says D-7006-142-187, another long-time guardsman. “We are part of a collective, united in our purpose to maintain order and security within society.”

The Guard’s superiors also see this ideology as crucial in maintaining the guardsmen’s unwavering loyalty and obedience. “By removing the distractions and desires that come with personal property and wealth, we are able to instill in our guardsmen a sense of duty and sacrifice,” explains a high-ranking official in the Guard. “This is essential in ensuring that they remain focused on their duties and are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice if necessary.”

According to Regulation 7.06.142, Guardsmen are permitted to maintain a limited number of personal possessions within a designated “personal box” located within their assigned locker.

The personal box shall be made of transparent material and measure no larger than 12 inches in length, 8 inches in width, and 6 inches in height. Possessions within the personal box must not pose a security risk or disrupt the orderly functioning of the Guard.

All personal possessions within the box shall be subject to inspection by superiors at any time. In accordance with Regulation 7.06.142, possession of items not approved by superiors, or possession of items in excess of the designated number and size, is strictly prohibited and may result in disciplinary action.
