Vivian raised her arms with a sigh, lazily taking in the mid-morning glow through her windows. At her sigh, a bundle of blankets next to her stirred, letting out a soft murmur of complaint at her sleep being disturbed. The gesture of contentment from someone she cared about sent a warm, fuzzy shiver through her body.

Thinking back at the previous day, her mind still reeled at the sheer weight of all that had happened. She’d never heard about ‘espers’ before, beyond passing mentions of a nebulous threat. To think, not only was I one, but I ended up with one in my bed...

She looked at Fia sitting beside her with apprehension. “Hey, girl. How are you feeling?” she whispered, an air of concern about her.

“... Not as good as I was feeling, Goddess. Why?” she sat up, blinking her eyes before giving Vivian a side-eyed look of amusement, her hungry expression betraying what she really wanted. She looked around the sparsely furnished room, her eyebrow raised. “You brought me to your home?“

“Well, I wasn’t going to leave you sleeping in some condemned house in the middle of nowhere. I drove us back after you fell asleep,” she explained. Fia narrowed her eyes. “You were being hunted by me, and you took me back to your bed? Even if I was under your control...“

Vivian shifted uncomfortably. “That’s what I was worried about. I was worried if you were okay. I’m not sure why... but I feel... something, when I think of you.”

Fia laughed. “What, love? At first sight? You may have planted that emotion into me, miss Charmer, but I don’t think anyone but a controller could boast of love like that. Certainly not me.“

“Don’t put yourself down, Fia. I do love you like that.“

Fia seemed to consider that. “Your eyes. Were they always that color?”

Vivian blinked. “Bit of a tonal shift, there... What’s that about?”

“They look almost... a reddish purple, if I look closely. They just looked brown at a glance. That’s not a natural color...”

“They’ve always been like that, I think. Is that, like... an esper thing? You’re the first person like me I’ve ever met, so I’m not exactly up to speed.”

“Yeah. Our eye color changes when we draw on our powers, like the red I get when I’m drawing on fire,” she said absentmindedly, ignoring the impatient look on Vivian’s face. “How do I explain this...” She called her power forward, creating a small swirl of sparks in her palm as demonstration, her eyes fading just like she’d said from hazel to bright red. “But your eyes stay like that. Is there a sensory component, or something, something that’s always on? That would explain that.” She made a thoughtful sound at Vivian’s nod. “So, if your power is always on... I think it might be a bit more complex than just Charm, Goddess.“

Vivian shook her head at the flood of information, getting off the bed and stepping to her closet to get dressed. “That’s a bit much to dump on me all at once... But either way, first of all, please, don’t call me Goddess.“

“Not even if I want to?“

She blushed, stammering for a moment. “I- ...if you must. But second... I have a guess, but what do you think my power is, then?“

“Well, a Charmer makes others feel, right?” At Vivian’s deadpan look, she laughed. “Okay, well, just assume that’s what they do. But you... you made us feel, not just me. You made me love you, but I think you also made yourself love me.“

I made her? Vivian stared at her, a look of dread on her face. “I... made you love me? And you’re okay with that?“

“Wow.” She blinked. “You really are new to this. Most espers would be ecstatic to have me so unconcerned about it. Honestly, you don’t seem like a bad person, Goddess. I’m not too broken up about loving someone as wonderful—and as good in bed—as you. Don’t beat yourself up about it. I was planning to do far worse to you. Honestly, I deserved this.“

That’s not... Vivian shook her head, feeling an odd tension in the fact that she definitely loved this girl... this girl who just admitted she was planning to hurt her, or worse. “Far worse? And you... don’t want to now?“

“Of course not. I love you.” Fia tightened her face at that. “Huh. Don’t think I could ever have said that before. Maybe this’ll be good for me, Goddess. It won’t solve all my problems, but hey, it might keep me centered.” Vivian’s heart softened a little. She wants to try...

“It might help to know what your power came from, Viv. Do you remember what happened when you Awakened—er, when you first used your power?” Fia said, remembering her own, a frantic escape from a burning house, and her hands suddenly holding the flames at bay as they licked at her, her friend cowering just behind her.

Vivian shuddered. “I... I’ll try.” Fia hugged her as she started to describe her earlier life, living isolated with her sled dogs in Alaska...

Fia rolled her eyes at Viv’s complaints as she walked down the supermarket aisle. “For the last time, Goddess, yes. I want this.” It had been cute the first few times, but there was only so much moral crisis a girl could take while shopping. “I’m the one who said we should stock up on food if you’re supporting both of us, right? What about that, precisely, sounds uncommitted?“

Viv frowned, but stayed quiet. Fia looked at her, studying her face, trying to figure out what she was thinking. Because if she’s still thinking about earlier... She followed Viv’s gaze, noticing the puppy on the food packaging she was looking at. Oh, hell. She’s thinking about- Fuck, fuck... need to lighten the mood. Distract her.

“Look, girl, I’m kind of into the hard-to-get, but this is a little much.” She glanced at the groceries, noticing that Vivian had taken out a cucumber and was inspecting it for bruises. “Although... if this whole act is just foreplay for what you’re planning with that cucumber, I’m game.” Right on cue, the adorable idiot flushed, problems forgotten, her mouth falling open to spill wordless objections at Fia. She’s easy to tease, at least, she thought, shrugging. “We’re done shopping, right? Since last I checked, they don’t carry dildos at the supermarket.” Viv, still blushing up a storm, nodded.

Well, we’ll just have to see how much of that exterior I can crack. She loves me too, right? I should be able to work with that...

Fia sighed, contented with the food. Damn, can that girl cook. Why would she be so hesitant to do it? She studied her lover’s distant expression, her eyes widening. It reminds her of her previous home. Her dogs, her... fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck. Okay, Let’s get her talking. Anything else.

“That food was amazing, Viv. You cook well. Although,” she smirked, “the salad was a bit tasteless.” That oughta...

“The only tasteless thing here is you, Fia. That salad was amazing,” she huffed, her face returning to the present moment with cold fire in her eyes.

“Honestly, no, I really wasn’t a fan. I don’t know, something about it felt so bland and lifeless.” She felt a surge of pride at seeing Vivian so offended. Something felt off about that...

“Well, fuck you too! I work my ass off making food for someone I’m not even sure I like, who’s been demanding I step outside my comfort zone all day, and this is how you thank me?” Vivian spat, her voice growing louder.

“Well, I’m sorry that the girl who made me love her isn’t exactly feeling the warmest about this relationship,” Fia growled, licks of flame starting to swirl around her hands in her anger. “You’re stuck with me, idiot. You seem to throw things you love away. You ever think that maybe it’d have been better if your dogs lived and you froze after that crash in Alaska?” The words fell from her mouth with an icy venom that belied her burning hands, crashing into Vivian like a physical force.

The stunned girl shied back, holding her head with her eyes wide. “That... no, that- that can’t be true. That isn’t true. That isn’t true, that isn’t true, thatisn’ttrue, thatisn’ttruethatisn’ttrue...” she murmured frantically, curling up into a ball. Fia felt a cold surge of triumph, but something about that felt wrong. That outburst... that wasn’t like her. Well, it was, but to someone she cared about? Wait, do I care about her? Am I... unsure? Why was she being so... her eyes widened. Cold.

“Vivian?” a new voice called. Fia whipped her head to the door to Viv’s apartment, now open. A blonde girl stood in the doorway, holding a key, eyes wide in shock. “What the hell is going on here?” She noted the door to the apartment on the other side of the hallway was open. Her neighbor?

Fia glanced at her hands, still swirling with fire, and a chill ran through her. She extinguished her hands, eliciting another gasp from the intruder. Fia leaned down to Vivian, feeling an odd sense of emptiness as she hugged the crying girl. “Viv. Use your power.”

“W-what?” Vivian stammered, shocked from her stupor.

“Get her to care enough that she doesn’t freak out. People are afraid of espers. She’s going to talk, and the ESPD—er, the authorities—will be on this place yesterday.” Fia tapped her temple. “Like you did to me. Quickly.”

Vivian’s eyes refocused into a frighteningly determined glare at the tone of her voice, tearing herself out of Fia’s hands and gripping her friend by her shoulders. “Estrid, I need you to calm down,” she said, pushing a bit of that heat into her terrified friend. Both of them gasped in shocked surprise as Vivian released Estrid’s shoulders, collapsing onto the ground as Fia closed the door, then rushed to Vivian’s side.

“Hey- Uh, I... Viv. I didn’t mean to—” Fia sorted through her jumbled emotions, trying to find the right words to say. Nothing felt right, and she wasn’t sure if that was because she wouldn’t be mean enough for Vivian to snap out of it, or if she was being too mean to someone she... felt nothing for? That couldn’t be right.

“It’s... fine. It’s fine? I... think I’m fine now. It feels less intense, now. I really love you, Fia... don’t do that again.” Fia felt chills running down her spine as she realized what using her power had just done to Vivian, and what emotion had returned to her.

“Uh... Viv. Hey. Does that mean you feel... warm?” she said, already dreading the answer.

“I... do. I didn’t, just before, did I? And you... That’s why...” Vivian said, eyes widening.

Fia nodded, and offered her wrist to Vivian. She took it, looking a bit confused, before what Fia was asking for clicked, and she poured a touch of warmth like a lifeline into her. Color returned to the world, and everything felt so much better. Vivian felt so much... better, to her, like a light which had been turned off suddenly brightening her day. Vivian looked relieved, but as she met Fia’s eyes, they wordlessly confirmed what they both had suspected. We’re addicted. Fia hugged Vivian, more to comfort herself from that fading cold than anything.

Estrid stumbled back, shaking her head in confusion at the mumbled words shared between the other girls. “What is going on? What did you...” she murmured, hesitantly reaching out to Vivian, who broke the hug with Fia, looking at her neighbor inquisitively. “I... that felt so good, V. I don’t...” she trailed off, hands starting to reach for Vivian’s body. I wasn’t that smitten when she got me, was I?

Vivian stumbled back when Estrid touched her. “Oh, by the gods. I just... addicted her. Just like I addicted you.”

Estrid looked at her hands in surprise, as if she hadn’t noticed them trying to grope her best friend. “Addicted? I didn’t even... what did you do to me, V?” She broke down, suddenly, crying. Vivian, not knowing what else to do, reached out and hugged her. She whispered in the sobbing girl’s ear, “Shhh, shhh. It’s okay. I’m here.“

Estrid’s sobbing grew quieter. Vivian shot Fia a look, and mouthed something, an expression of panic on her face. The message was clear.

“What the fuck have I done?”

* * *

Estrid shook her head in disbelief. “So. You’re... an esper? I thought those were, like, monsters with horrible powers who were a menace. Not, like, someone who could share love.” Estrid shook her head in disbelief. “Although it didn’t take much of that to get me.” At a raised eyebrow from Fia, she continued, “I’ve had a crush on this girl for months, but she’s either too oblivious or too embarrassed to reciprocate. As I’m sure you’ve noticed.” Fia laughed, earning a playfully offended look from Vivian.

“And you’re... not worried about what I did to you? You seemed so distressed...” Vivian said, shifting around in her seat.

Estrid rolled her eyes. “I’d just been hit with a freight train of new information. Anyone’d have been a bit broken up, but girl, if you’d come to me before and asked me to spend my life with you forever, it wouldn’t have taken much convincing. I get that I’m addicted to you. You did explain that quite clearly. And yeah, that’s probably not the ideal thing from a logistical standpoint, but who cares?” Vivian blushed, looking down at the floor. “Jeez, Fia, I can see what you mean. Girl’s got no self-confidence. Can’t believe the idea that someone would want to be addicted to her touch.“

“About that,” Fia interjected, musing. “It took about a day and a half to set in, right? That’s not that hard to maintain. And the only real side effect is that we both got cranky, at least, at first. I think it’d have been a lot worse if you didn’t step in, though.”

“So, how’s this going to work, then? I can stay where I am, since I live just down the hall. Fia’s going to have to live with one of us, and based on how I feel right now, that’s probably going to be you.” Fia nodded assent, continuing for Estrid. “But does that make us your girlfriends? Because if so... damn, you’re one lucky girl, V.” She scooted up close, pressing her forehead against Vivian’s, and leaning in for a kiss. Surprised, Vivian jerked her head back at first, but then relented, melting into a passionate, slow kiss. Estrid watched, more than a little turned on. By a kiss? Damn, Estrid, you’re going soft. Although I can’t exactly blame myself for that, she thought, her attention passing over that pulse of warmth permeating everything she was. She coughed slightly, causing Fia and Vivian to break their kiss, looking at her with a fierce hunger. She grinned.

“Hey, lovebirds. Don’t leave me out of it,” she said. She walked to Vivian’s bedroom, gesturing for them to follow.
